200 ci rebuild

I would REALLY like to rebuild my 200, but its my daily driver and when i take it off the road its during school and i dont have time, so i was wondering what is the average running cost to having one rebuilt, it still runs good but it couldnt hurt and maybe while im doing it i may put on a 2 bbl carb, headers, and maybe a DUI ignition, not looking for 200hp, maybe just a little more grunt off the line, im not gonna do all that stuff wiithout rebuilding it so was wondering if yous could toss some possible "ball parks" thatd be awesome

Thanks, Lee

depends on the quality of the shop. My shop just threw a quote out for a 427 rebuild that was mid 4k's. As a comparison, they quoted me 600 bucks to port a six head, so if you're outside CA it will definitly be lower.

Their opinion is that the rebuild cost is determined by the quality of work, and the adhearance to closely matching a specification, rather than the specification itself determining the cost (and I agree). That was with new pistons and heads.

Your best option is to get a rebuildable 200 core, rebuild it with all of the goodies, then swap out the engines.

That way you'll have less downtime with your DD.

Man how much i would love to have another engine i just cant seem to locate one all the scrapyards around me dont keep anything older than the 90s what do u suggest?

Your kiddin :bang: ive looked for a couple years and ive only seen one slant six on an old dodge truck, i would love to get another 200 with the 7 main. Im about 2 hour drive from Detroit,MI

1 170 and 2 250 here that'll ship ur way for $150.
Quote here is 700 for rebuild in prts and 700 for machine time. Depends on where ur @ geographically...

My suggestion is APPLICATION!
In the automotive world think of ur goal - do lots of research, know what the end goal is and stick close 2 dat, no variation as U go along. IMHO - Get it solid in plan & don't vary from that till it's pumped out.
THAT will give U "ball park" figures. U gotta go along (simultaneously w/research) not just guess...
Keep talkin @ us.

In some parts of the country there are some 200's available. Look for 78-79 right around there Granada, Fairmont and Maverick. What year is your current engine?

I would love to get another 200, mine is a 71' 200 out of a Maverick.
My goal is rebuild mostly everything that would come in the classic inlines master rebuuild kit, if i do get the ability to do this i would most likely put in the extra buck for a 2 bbl carb,DUI,and i already do have a header on the way, also to bore 0.10 to clean up cylinders. And do the cylinder head rebuild from CI also.

The offers are tempting chad but i like the 7 main from the later 200s than the 4 main 170, and not sure if 250 will bolt up too my 1962 2 speed trans.????Or should i start lookin for a T5 or something?
I know u guys are the experts so im gonna ask: is the 250 (heavier, wider, taller) than the 200, same block as 200(so it can bolt the same way to my engine mounts?)And between the two which is better/reliable 200/250?
If you guys reply with it being relatively similar to the 200 in pretty much every way, i will definitly keep you in mind chad cuz that seems decent price to get to me.

bmbm40, i have NEVER seen a granada, fairmont, have seen couple mavericks but they were fixed up at car show, and for scrapyards around here, im lucky to see something older than 1990.

see something older than 1990
Ur sig doesn't show ur address but same way here - nothing over 10 yr old in the yrds round here (off to the crusher).

The 250 is IIRC 20% more power. BUT it's 2 inches taller so can cause some hood or other probs. Wanna a scoop - that eliminates it. Yes bearly wider. Trani? I don't know the 200 but U can put any of the "big block" (wrong nomenclature I know - 300, 302, 351 2 B more accurate) trannys on it. 1 reason I got it but it in a "truck" (C sig). Takes a 3.03 3 speed stock (rated to 500 hp). Also 250 takes the Oz head n intake (upto 500 hp, again, Y that # keeps commin up?).

This '68 170 has the 7 mains I believe, anyway...
The main thing is to research till U got an end goal in mind and build toward that (no changes along the way).

Im in Wallaceburg Ontario,Canada ummm like A 40 min. drive from Port Huron,MI to give u a better perspective.

A 250 may be a better upgrade i guess, since you have a great variety of choices ffor transmissions, your almost making me cchange my mind, i would imagine there would be some sort of low profile air cleaner that could help with clearence idk, all in all i dont really like my 2-speed trans; sure its original but not much else on the car is so why bother,i know the enignes can handle it but 55mph it turns over 2500 rpm, a 5 speed stick sure would make drivin it more fun, little more efficient on highways too, what transmission is good, and to fit into my 62 comet, or does it matter just have the driveshaft fitted to work?I should upgrade to 5 lig also, if anyone can help me out there that'd be greeat, like which rear-end and which front suspension will work.

I am very confident in what ii want done, just gotta save up some pennies, btw keep a hold of one of those 250's b/c i just may consider it, if u could, cuz i dont have much luck finding any thats for sure.

Thanks, Lee

Hi Lee!
Suprised no j.yrds of help in yer area...
I woulda gone w/a 300 but would hafta move the firewall or radiator (not enuff: money, time, skill, tools/equipment...)

"...of low profile air cleaner..."
Yes, it's bein discussed in nother thread currently. Guy frm Down Under had good suggestions, I got 1 stock offa smaller 6, will fit YF's flange.

Not sure bout the T5 (auto = C4 I assume & that's a nice/older 1) cuz I run in nother direction - truck. 2 NVs fit, a few ZFs, but again truck 5 speeds. I like the C4 as it's 1 a the lowest power robbers in the autos (was behind the 302 in '70s as well). Guys here can suggest...

"...upgrade to 5 lig also..."
I assume FFS (fat finger syndrome) means 'u' for the 'i' = LUGs (@ yer wheels). Hang in there. Again, plenty here can guide U in that.

Lee,

I just used http://www.car-part.com , input the following information (1973, Ford Maverick, Engine, zip code 48060, and 6-200) and came up with several 200s within a 300 mile radius. Granted most of them didn't have price listed ($Call), and those that did were a little pricey, $350 - $600, but they are available.

As far as the 250cid, it is 2-inches taller than the 144-200 engines, and wider at the mounting bosses adding to the total height. You can do things to compensate for the increased height by slotting the motor mounts on the block, and using a low profile air cleaner. The 250 also has a low mounted starter and uses a bellhousing similar to the 302 V8, which wouldn't allow you to use your old 2spd auto. However, you can run an AOD transmission behind it.

Hope this helps.

Boy, be careful. I paid $2100 to have the lower end done, I supplied the cam, ignition, new carb, cylinder head. It was supposed to be decked, balanced, cam degreed - all the little things. It still doesnt run. It took me 2 weeks to get the machine shop to admit they didnt degree it and now he wont stand behind it. I am having a hard time trying to find anyone else to help out.

So, be very very careful who you deal with

Here's one. It's not mine, but it's only a three hour drive from you.

Nice, the only 250's near me in San Francisco is for 550, and one in Los Angeles for 250 they want you to pull for them. My passes in the yards only throw up 170's or 200's, and rarely at that.

can a c4 bolt up to a 200?
I will probly guve that guy a text about the 200, seems like a good deal, dont like driving in the U.S. cuz i dont have insurance there, i got the cheapest deal cuz its crazy expensive for a 17y/o where im at anyway.
What do u suggest for a different trans.(that will go up to the 200 and/or 250) for future changes cuz i dont really have deep feelings for my two speed, revs kinda high on highway, to the point where my mpg is the same for city and highway(22mpg).
Never found anything on carpart.com, and never have...
Will Let u know how i make out with the 200, if thats a no go then i may just lean pretty far toward chad with one of your 250s

Thanks for the heads up dentist

Lee

My 200 currently has a c4, it just has a different bell than a 250 c4 would have. For a 250, I'd go with a t5, but then for all 6's I'd to a t5, so I guess that doesn't count.

I think their is an adapter to bolt a t5 to a 200. The best tool you can have is the Falcon Performance Manual. It is the best and only book on Ford 170,200,and 250 engines and trans performance mods and data. Best $25 bucks I ever spent.

I forgot to mention to look for picnpull yards. Our local picnpul let me register my email address and they prenotify me of upcoming half price days. In May I got a 250 with the accessorie brackets, alt, power steering pump, air cleaner and DSII for about $180.
Also if you can just find a good late model head you can do the mods on that and install over the weekend not alot of downtime. That 71 head you have is small intake volume which can't be overcome and small valves and non hardened seats.
