200 flywheel questions

63---comet

New member
I have got a 62 comet with a seized (from sitting since 1990) 144 / 2 speed automatic
SO...... I picked up a 200cu from a 68 mustang, but the flywheel is missing.
Can the 144 flywheel be used or is the balance different ?
Also have a 250 C4 combo from a 78? granada with a rotted oil pan, but dont want the hassles of trans mount fabrication and oil pan purchase. The 250 seems like more of a pain than it's worth. I want to keep the swap simple and looking almost stock

There are some really good tips on your options in the Driveline department. There were a bunch of upgrades from the original 144 of 1960 to 1969, when the first 250 came out.

Q1.I picked up a 200cu from a 68 mustang, but the flywheel is missing.

A1.All in-liner sixes have no unbalance, so any flywheel or flexplate will work if it fits.

I 've never dealt with one, but I doubt the 144 Fordomatic bell will fit a 68 block unless its dual pattern. I'm not sure. You'll have to get a C4 or 3.03 or T5 Mustang box.

Some details:

There are 132, 136, 148, 157 and 164 tooth flywheels for the small sixes.

All 144-170-200 I6's have the same 2.75" pitch, six bolt hole pattern on the crank, with two types of four bolt bellhousing.

Late 1981 to 1984 200's have the big bell, six bolt bellhousing

All 250's have a V8 style 3" pitch six bolt crank, and Small Block 6 bolt bellhousing. None of the flexplate or flywheels fit the 144 or 200 engines.

A 250 can fit a 62 Falcon easily if you follow the tech section guidlines. S-10 Chevy radiators and an electric fan allow it to come together well. Engine mounts and space isn't a major issue if you use the right gear.

If its Octobr 59 to October 61, then you'll have major issues as there is no room around the bellhousing for the bigger 250. Your only option is getting a Mustang II 302 transmission.

So you are saying the 1962 144 has a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the 1968 200 ? I thought there were only I6 & V8 patterns:arg:
AND I know the 250 C4 has the V8 style bolt pattern.
When did the dual pattern blocks come out?

Yes there are two small six bell bolt patterns.

But the '68 WILL have both patterns in the block. The '68 200 willl be an absolute bolt-in. (I use a '78 bolck with a '60 bell and No Problems.)

Water pumps come in two lengths. If the 200 has a longer pump, use your shorter 170 pump.

Some 200 use an different shaped oil pan. If it is not the same shape as your 170, then use the 170 pan and oil-pickup tube

If the 200 originally had a std tranny, make certain that the pilot bearing (bushing) - brass bushing with approx. 1/2 inch hole in it - has been removed from the rear of the crankshaft. The Auto tranny won't bolt up if it is there!

You CANNOT use the 170 distributor in the 200. However the cap, points, and advance are the same. The 170 has a smaller drive shaft than the 200. On the bright side, now you'll be able to add a DuraSpark II electronic ignition.

The '68 is also set up for an alternator. It takes a little wire splicing, but an alternator is the better way to go.

Good Luck

I looked at the 200 block and your right it's a bolt in.
So i'll be rebuilding it and dropping it in. It was from an automatic car. i'll stick with the generator & points for now (just want to hear it run).
Thanks for the reply
