Hello! I have a 65 Mustang that was built for the Los Angeles market, and thus it has a California emissions system. I was just curious about some of the info about these 200s. I know that the exhaust manifold, cylinder head, distributor, carb, and air filter are California specific, but are there any other parts on the 200 that are California specific? What is the power difference between SCV equipped and non SCV equipped? are any of these parts sought after?

Hi akidwithacar, the 1964 1/2 & all 1965 Mustangs that were sold in California are the same Carb and Distributor as were used on the other 49 state cars. The big change came with the all the new for 1966 200 Six Models not just the Mustangs all the California 200 Six's got these better California Emissions parts of a Non SCV Autolite 1100 Carb and a Duel Advance Point Distributor plus some other parts. For the most power yes you would want to use the later Non SCV Carbs and the better Duel Advance Distributor's the rest of the States didn't get those parts until 1968. Yes these later parts are more sought after for those that are Modding their cars. Better still is to used the 1976 to 1983 DuraSpark II Electronic Ignition System Parts or to use that DS II Distributor to Triger an MSD 6AL, than adding a 2V Carb on a Later 1977 to 1983 Large Log Head. Good luck.

Well then im very confused, as my engine was built on Oct. 26, 1964 according to the stamps on my engine, and I for sure do have California emissions parts, as well as I was told that the motor was original to the car.

Hi, I cannot be specific about California emission parts, but I can say that certain parts and systems, like PCV and EGR originated in California. Some of these parts and systems ended up on 49 state cars, and some did not.
Bubba is our in house expert, and he had a shop in California back in those days, so he speaks from personal experience.
Perhaps you can post some pictures of the emission parts in question and you may get some answers. Good luck

Alright thank you very much.

So which parts does it have on it plus any pictures will also help to? All I remember seeing on the Southern Calif. Cars (which was the leader of all the Emissions Movement) for their OEM Emissions Systems on the 1961 to 1965 model cars was the first PCV System's, All the Flathead V8's starting in 1949 as well as the first OHV V8's from 1954 to 1956 and the Small and Big Sixes going from the late 1950's (the 215, 223, 262 OHV Six). All of our Falcon small six's (144, 170, & 200's) from 1960 to 1965 will have the SCV Carbs like a Holley 1904 or then on the Later model Small and Big Six's (223 & 262's) got the AutoLite 1100 or 1101, plus they also had the Infamous Load O Matic Distributors in California up to the end of 1965 models, the other 49 states used those until the end of 1967 models.

Also remember that Calif. also required the earlier OHV engine Car's and Trucks to be retrofitted with the PVC System within only a few years of the first factory installed PVC systems used on the 1961 models. It didn't stop there there were quite few other Aftermarket Systems that the ARB (Air Resources Board of Southern California) also required over the years such as the No NOx system to control the Vacuum Advance system, plus they controlled the Emissions of the Gas Stations, Spray Painting and Auto Body Shops, Smoke Stack Industries, Bakeries, etc. California was at that time the second only to Michigan with its many Automotive Assembly Plants but little by little it soon became unprofitable for them to meet all the requirements so they mostly left California.

Hello! Sadly I do not have any pictures at the moment as the entire motor is disassembled due to the cylinder head breaking and just being worn out. Off the top of my head it has the California air intake and oil cap, exhaust manifold, SCV equipped 1100, and it does have the load-o-matic distributor. According to the vin tag it was sold in Los Angeles.

Ok then can you look for the the Head and Block Casting / Design Numbers as well as the Casting Date Codes? These will tell if those parts are still Original to your Car, after 57 plus years some parts could have been swapped out. See the 1st & 2nd pictures below are a very early 1963 1/2 to 1964 1/2 200 Six Block and Head showing the Design Numbers. In the 3rd Picture is a 1965 200 Six Block Design Code, and in the 4th picture and what a Ford Casting Date Code will look like, it will look like a small metal Tag in the Casting with a straight blade Screw Head on each end plus it will have 2 to 3 Numbers and 1 Letter. As I stated above there were no factory installed A.I.R. (Air Injection systems) used on the California Cars until the 1966 year Models and their Emissions systems for the 1965 or the early 1964 1/2 Models were no different than those used by the other 49 states, however that doesn't mean someone couldn't of installed the later Head and those parts afterwards, any way the Head Design Numbers and the Casting Date Codes will tell the tale. The fact that it still has the SCV Autolite 1100 Carb and a Load-O-Matic Distributor this is correct for all the 170 or 200 Small Six's from the introduction of the Mustang's on April 17, 1964. So all the Ford Small Six's would used a SCV Autolite 1100 through the end of the 1965 Model year.

With your old Small Log head being broken and worn out if your not trying to do a Factory type restoration this would be the perfect opportunity to find a later Model 200 or 250 Six Large Log Head in one of your Junk Yard hunts by 1977 to 1983 they will all have the largest Factory installed Intake Valves (1 3/4 inch) all the 1969 up Large Logs will out flow those old small Log Heads even if you did a full porting job and installed large Valves it will come up much cheaper to use the Latest Large Log Head instead, plus a little Milling to get the Head CC's right. Then ditch the Autolite SCV Carb and the old Load O Matic for the a larger and newer 1V or a 2V Carb along with a better Distributor too ( I like the DuraSpark II and it drops right in to the 1965 up Short blocks) and you can gain some power. Good luck

Hello! thank you so much for the info. I actually did find a 77 250 head in the junkyard this past weekend, but unfortunately the valve cover had a hole and the hood was removed so the cylinder head was to far gone, but the hunt is still on. I was unable to locate the little metal tag you talked about, but here are some photos I took while disassembling it. According to my VIN tag my car was built on November 19 1964 at the San Jose plant. I will be able to find the code on the block later tonight.

Hi akidwithacar, your Cylinder Head C5DE-6090-A is a 1965 Design Number, the 4K26 Casting Date Code means the Head was Cast at the Ford Engine Foundry on Monday October 26, 1964. With the car being built on Thursday November 19, 1964, only 24 Days later. Plus the demand for the Mustangs was high then so they were building the cars as fast as they could so that Head is probably original to your car. From what I see of your engine I don't see any signs of Emissions System Parts other than the standard PCV system. You have a good looking 1965 Mustang!

Hi, your valve cover looks like my 66 valve cover, in fact the whole engine looks original except for the oil filler breather. The original breather is just a push on cap, without the tube that goes to the air filter. Good luck

Awesome! thank you so much. I will post pictures of the distributor, air filter, and any other item that may be emissions parts when I am able to and post them. Thank you for answering my never ending questions, I love learning about these things.
