200CID Help

Hello
I have a 1966 ford fairlane 500 with the 200cid motor. I have a few questions if you will take the time to answer them. The car idles perfect no hesitation but when I press the accelerator it hesitates. I have to feather the gas to get it to rev up enough to get it going. What could cause this problem. I have no clue what it could be. I rebuilt the carb. cleaned the advance on the distrib. new plugs, wires, points, condencer, gas line, filters etc still same problem. Also my fuel gauge does not work it just auto climbs to FULL. Im ordering a new sending unit for it soon to see if its the sending unit as the sending unit in it now is from a mustang.
I was also thinking of putting headers on it with some thrushes and put a 2bbl carb on it. What size carb is recommended for that. (CFM or model).

Your accelerator pump in the carb may not be working right.

Shut the engine off, take off the air cleaner and look into the carb throat as you move the accelerator linkage.
Do you see a shot of gas going into the venturi? If not, the accelerator pump is not working right and you will have to tear the carb back down and check the rubber piece on the rod.

If the pump is working properly, check the distributor advance.

Do what bubba22349 suggested and read up on the load-o-matic distributor, Ford used it until 1967 when they went with a vacuum advance.
Make sure the carb you have has the LOD port that connects to the distributor with a metal tube.

You can use a LOM carb with a vacuum advance distributor, but you can't use a LOM distributor without a LOM carb.

I want to also rebuild my motor, From top to bottom. I want to get a little more horse power plus I want to mount the 2bbl 2100 on the motor. What suggestions for cams, pistons, rockers, lifters etc. I will be putting a header kit from ClassicInline on the 200 motor with dual thrush mufflers. Any suggestions or recommendations would be great.

I noticed you said you changed your points. Maybe they could use an adjustment. I know very little about the points and condensor system but I do know that I use to have a lot of hesitation similar to what you describe. That all went away when I switched to the Pertronix ignition.

I'm currently building a 250 in a '67 Ranchero that shares the same engine compartment as your '66 Fairlane. It has a 2v with 274* cam headers with single muffler backed by an AOD tranny. There are two ways to go with the 2v, a direct mount or adaptor. The adaptor is the easiest but not the most HP. I went with a direct mount and small Autolite 2100 carb. Almost ready to fire it up.

My last Ranchero I ran a dual pattern 264/274* cam that a lot of folks have good results with. That a 2v adaptor with a Weber carb sounds like a good combo on a 200.

There's a lot of good info on Classicinlines.com tech section and get a copy of Falcon Performance Manual.
