Hi fellow sixers. I'm a newbie to the forums here, and have some questions. I've got a 1960 f-100 step side shorty w/big back window. I bought the truck when I was 15 w/42,000 original miles in 1988. I beat it to death in High School, and have stored it since 1991(just over 60,000 miles now). Now I want to get her going again with some speed parts. I've read everything I could on the forum, and will go with headers, intake, and probably convert over to a pertronix ignition system. I havent seen anything regarding performance heads for this block. Is there an easy way to increase the compression to the 9.5:1 range? Another question: how important is it to have hardened valve seats, and who is a competent head worker for these?

Thanks for help. This is a great resource.

BTW: engine is 223.

you could shave the block to get a CR boost
and the hardened seats are a big deal over time, eventually the valves will be pushed into the head causing all sorts of problems, the least of which will be poor flow

as for a competent worker, the above should be available through any decent machine shop, but there are probably still some performance shops that can do whatever you want, as long as you make sure they're interested in a six

have you thought about jumping up to a bigger engine size? maybe a 262?

you can get oversized valves and deck the head.

I have a 215 that has a little oversize valves and the head has been decked .060 i also have a cam and the bore is .060 over which is basicly a 223.

definalty go to a reputible shop. machine work means the world. you might want to call larry at clifford performance and pick his brain a little. hes pretty knowledgable with these things.

forget about that 262 and drop DOWN to a 215.......

Im sure fiddyfour will chime in and have a few things to say.

262's are rare as hens teeth and frog hair. The 223 is a tough little engine. Rebuild the head with the hardened seats & valves, have some one who knows what they are doing do a port & polish. That should gain both longevity and performance.

I'm located in South East Minnesota. Any good head guys in the twin cities area or Rochester? Its pretty hard to find someone into these old sixers.

I'm in Montana so I have no clue who would be good in SE Minnesota. I would think that a good machine shop/engine rebuild shop with a good reputation should not be too hard to find. You could perhaps contact some car clubs in the twin cities/Rochester area find out who gets named as being very good or mentioned the most or even find out who people would not use again.

Heh... 215 indeed... you anialate that flat V-ate of your brothers yet Travis?

anyhow... as was mentioned, shaving the head and bigger valves with hardened seats are a fast way to gain a bit of HP... find a set of Barker hi-lift rocker arms if you dont want to cam your motor, you can usualy find them for about $50 per set, to do the intake and exhaust you need two sets.

as far as bumping up to a 262, hell IF you can find one, ditch the 262 block and keep the crank and rodz... 223 stroker bay bee

you'd end up with about 264 cubic inches (depending on the overbore and deck shave), and hella lot of cubic dollars but hell, it aint easy bein in line

one more thing, forgot to add,,,

Dan10, there is a guy here in farmington mn who builds a lot of stock car mills for the guys down at Elco speedway... he's done several eye-sicks motors, as well as a couple of fireball eight plants. i'll get you his contact info when i get home... the name of the shop is extreem engines in farmington... donno if google would turn anything up on him or not.

straight shooter, and if he cant take care of your engine in a timely fasion, he'll tell you straight. he's an awesome machinist and hella fun to shoot the shit with.
