2bbl Direct mount

IIRC at one time there was a link to modifying the round log head to directly mount a 2bbl. Will somebody point me in the right direction.

Thanks to you both. I've spent the last hour coping the prints to file so I maintain a record other than the links. It would appear looking at the work done as both designs use the larger square log head and this would not work on the smaller round heads that I now have. Back to the drawing board or go looking for the larger head.

The more I look at this, the more I love it...

There is a difference in heads? A round and a square? Is that what you guys are saying?

Thanks :D

The early 200's had a smaller log in some what a round shape. I think the larger log came about due to the need for more air on the smog controlled engines. The heads pictured have some what of a square appearance side to side and are a bit larged than the older style. They were the prodominate type on the 200 through 67 even though I have seen them on the 200 as late as 69. I know the guy who previously owned and sold Mike his '69 fastback and IIRC the original engine had the round head six when that owner bought it.

Thanks for the confirmation. I was afraid that the round log would not provide enough room for the required milling. As soon as I can get a leaking header problem resolved I'm going to give the 3X1 Offy one more try and if I can't get it to run correctly by the end of the month, I will scrap the whole idea and then make a decision on trying to use one of the round logs I have with larger valves and a single 1 bbl or go to the time and expense of locating a later square log head and milling for a 2 bbl. IIRC the later head has a larger volume in the firing chamber and would have to be milled to get any decent compression. Any futher advise or inf will be greatly appreciated. One major question on my alternatives, does any one know if the 264/274 cam will run ok with a 1bbl on round log.

i ran a 274 duration cam on the round log head with a 2 brl on an adapter and it ran just fine

and try checking your header gasket that may be the exhaust leak and if it is get a new one and cut the piece that goes between ports 3 and 4 out that is what i had to do cause the exhaust gases were getting behind that piece and tearing it up creating an exhaust leak

Thanks, that sounds like a good idea on the gasket, and another great idea for an application if I scrap the current project.

I don't know if you have David's book. He has a fairly long and informative section about the larger log head and he lists the casting numbers for the model you'd want. He also tells how much to mill to get the right CR.

I haven't got past the spark plug indexing yet but you are well down the road with the engine mods. Now's when the info really kicks in.

Thanks for the reminder. Ya' know, I had totally forgotten that I had a copy of his book out in the garage. Sounds like it's time to break it out again and do a little study.
