'66 170 starter dimensions

I bought a header which when I test-fit hits the starter stud. When I talked to customer service, It was suggested that the starter may be a replacement, and that the dimensions may be different. I'm pretty sure that it is the original starter, but was wondering:
1. How do I tell?
2. Does anybody know what the original dimensions for a 170 six starter are? It's out of a 66 bronco, but I doubt that there were different starters for different applications.
3. Does anybody know that replacement starters came in different sizes?
Thanks!

I ran into the same problem with a Clifford header. Fix was to dent the header to clear the bolt. Since then I have learned the starter from a 144ci is smaller. When the time comes to replace the starter I will try to find a mini high torque starter if they exist for our application.

This goes back to the problem I asked you about on the early Bronco forum (I'm canary28 over there).
Do you know if your starter is a stock-size unit? Given that you and I aren't the only two who have encountered this problem, I suspect it is stock size.
I also suspect a 144 starter wouldn't last very long cranking a 170 or 200 engine.

Yea, mine is a stock starter. I have to wonder if the Classic Inline headers would fit better, but I can't afford to buy a set just to find out.

THE CI Headers are a better fit . I can't Remember the difference in length but the earley 144 starter is 4" in. Diameter as opposed to 4 1/2" for the later ones. Finding a 4" is the cheapest way followed by a mini starter
