well, I JBwelded the carb together...it never did run great...kinda like it had a vacuum leak or something. I forgot to install some valve thing, so it was sucking air from another hole in the carb...not sure if thats what did it or not. I was trying to tune up the carb cause i forgot that i didnt install that part, and then i hear a pop and it runs really crappy and there is a ton of black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe...also coming from one of the head bolts is kind of like a leak, either that or its hot and just bubbling, but its the only one doing it. Tell me what i have to do guys cause i'm really in a bind now

EVERY single spark bluck is coated in black soot...so does that mean my carb is finally hooped? will a new carb help? that would explain why it ran allright and then really crappy...

does anyone know if the 1-2 bbl adapter will work with a 2bbl from a dodge?

I'm getting desperate now...although if i lose too much time off work I might quit and find something within walking distance.

Why can't you just pop a replacement carb on it? Surely the income from your job will cover that soon enough.

but is it the carb? i dont want to fork out 150 bucks for a carb and find out its something else. i cant findany more carbs at the local yard and the other ones are too far away and i wont have a ride anywhere till tonight when everything is closed...if i know the adapter will fit the 2bbl i have then i can fork out 50 bucks and get it running and at least have upgraded while i was at it.

or just get a used one that runs and start there

sounds like it is ouit of timing....and maybe running way to rich and it backfired

I hope your right chaz....i sure would hate to have to rip the engine apart...I'll find out though later. I redid the carb, installing the proper piece and using a few different pieces from other carbs that i had...need to pick up a gasket and filter (broke it by accident) and then I'll see how it runs...I'll be sure to post back afterwards. I'm gonna have to call a freind if it doesnt work and get him to pick me up for wok...i cant go to any wreckers till saturday (the inconvenience of a full time job)..the carb i have now did run fine...i just forgot a valve when i put it back together...i reinstalled it, so It should run pretty much the same as it did before the mishap...if not I'll do a compression check (gonna have to find the gauge)

I'm guessing it's just the carb. At least I sure do hope so. Let us know how it turns out.

well...after redoing the carb again and having the black smoke again and hardly running, i did the compression check...120 thru all 6 cylinders except #3 which was still only 125...so its lowish but consistant. I ordered in a rebuilt carter carb which is costing me 150 bucks with a 20 dollar core charge...regular price is 210.00  but I'm a regular and get the "good mans discount", lol. so if that doesnt fix the problem then I'm in the poor house (unless i dig into gas money and then savings, which i dont want to do).

its weird that it suddently acted up like this, but i might have an idea how to fix it. there was a small hole that got covered up before with JB weld, which i opened up again today..must have been a metering hole or something, but maybe its actually running as rich as i have it set for now... I have the metering rod adjustment screw tightened quite a bit so maybe its just dumping fuel in :? I'm gonna get some parts together to make a non funtional carb for the core charge part...at least i can keep this carb to experiment with and still have a new stock carb. Let u know how things go tomorrow though.

going to a buds house tonight so i can go to work tomorrow, but i wont get off till about 6ish, but my dad said he'd get the carb and install it, so thats pretty cool..hopefully the cars running for saturday.

sounds like the same prob i had with my old carb after i rebuilt it it turned out that a vacume passage had collasped, tons of black smoke and woudnt idle worth a darn i ended up replacing the carb and all was fine.

carbs on our cars are like the computer brains....most important part IMO

HI
I tend to say its the carb as well... the black soote on the plugs is from a rich condition... Maybe the power valve is bad or too big.. or even the float level to high causeing gas to run in viva the bowl vent..
Tim

If the boiling bolt you were talking about is near the # 3 or # 4 cylinders, that is to be expected. What ever fluid is in that area will boil because directly below it is your #3 and #4 exhaust ports.

The boiling bolt is on #3 cylinder...so thats fine then. I got my new carter carb...cost me 170 bucks after its all said and done  grrrr...i had it running for a bit when i got home today, the battery had died cause i forgot to tell my dad i disconnected the coil (did compression check) and he installed the carb and tried to start it till it died...it had enough juice to fire up when i connected the coil today, but i just went out again to tune it up and it needs a boost so right now i'm waiting for dad to get home...but when it was running It ran half decent for needing to still be adjusted and the smoke was just white from the condensation...so i'm happy now... I dont think its gonna have near as much power as my last carb but at least its more reliable...gonna leave it that way for awhile. Hopefully the gas mileage will pay for the carb in time. Thanks for your info guys, really valuable...i love this forum a whole lot, just hope i can get to go to the states some time for a show or something.

oh yea...i also found out that i do have adjustable vacuum advance...do i need to tighten it or loosen it for less advance? I'll try it out later but with my last carb it would ping if i floored it, so if that happens then i'll need to reduce the amount of advance. Thanks again

i had 2 stripped screws and i also had a vacuum leak...i decided to eliminate the carb as the source of the leak by JB welding it...easier than drilling and tapping new holes and getting new bolts, just a PITA if u have to open it up again. anways that carb is gone now and i have the new one to deal with...the new carb doesnt seem that great. It smells rich and the engine mises...I'm gonna try cleaning the plugs and the cap/rotor first though, but i dont think the rebuild was that great cause i think it leaks around the top gasket of the carb. I thought it was water (cause i have a funtional scoop so water drips down onto it) but i smelled it and it smelled like fuel, so I'm not totall sure but I have a bit of stuff to do to it still...oh yea, I still have a vacuum leak. Is there any possibility of a cracked intake? can i just use water in a squirt bottle to try to find the leak?

vac leaks: I used to use brake cleaner to detect `em, but ever since I was advised about a propane torch (not lit) I´m taking that route.

Talking of leaks in the gasket flange area, what carb are you dealing with right now?

same kind of carb..carter YF. Its not at the carb base its at the top..I'm watching it though and it doesnt seem to be too bad...I did some more tuning and its much better...doesnt seem to act like a vaccum leak right now, but it seems to come and go, just have a bit of a miss, but its probably time for another cap/rotor. I certainly dont have the same power with this stock carb...I see the next few days if my gas mileage is worth the power loss though.

Am I the only one who was curious why you were JB welding all the seams on your carburetor?

seems like there should be something else to use. Carb doesnt get that hot that you cant use a sealer of another kind......

actually i did origionnaly use a gasket sealer...workedpretty good and was still hard to seperate...just got sick and tired of the vacuum leak so i thought id make sure, lol...oh well that carb is gone and i have a new one that sucks.

I'm gonna change out the platinums again..i started out with them to test it out, going back to the v-groove, see how much of a difference that makes. its wierd though...it starts hard (needs lots of gas to start) and then when it runs it smells rich, still get a bit of detonation, so i think i'll completely tighten the vacuum advance screw (will that make it non functional then? might as well block it off if it does) who knows...ive i get sick of this carb then I'l probably end up taking it apart and playing with it cause right now the gas mileage sucks compared to the last carb.
