Well i adjusted the timing it was a little off. I tried to start it but still nothing. I did get what sounded like a few backfires up through the carb and actually saw a flame burning from top of carb. So i stopped trying to start it. Any suggestions on what i should try next ?

Thanks

It sounds like your distributor is 180* out of sync. Also, check your wire order on the cap. It's got to be one of those things, unless your timing chain slipped.

Ok, since 180 degrees out seems to be the winner i have some more dumb questions. I want to make sure which side is supposed to be pointed at the #1 at TDC. Is it the circle end that is in the center of the rotor or the piece that sticks out of the rotor ? My second question is do i point the rotor at the #1 spark plug or the the #1 wire on the distributor cap ? I know these are funny questions but this is my first time doing all this.

Thanks

There is really no "have to" way that the distributor needs to be oriented, it is up to you. Personally, I pointed TDC #1 with the rotor pointing right at the firewall. That way TDC was parallel to the engine. Made it easier to set.

HEre is a general procedure:

1) Pull #1 spark plug out.

2) Start to rotate the engine by hand. You have to look inside the cylinder and see if you can see the intake valve opening. You should be able to just see it at maximum lift. Use a flashlight to help. Once you see the intake valve close continue to rotate the engine by hand (using the crank) until it goes all the way up and appears to stop moving before it comes down. That is TDC. Make a mark on the crank.

3) Now look where your rotor is pointing. That is where if you put the distributor cap back on that #1 wire should be located to be TDC.

4) Now advance that position a little. Put the cap back on, and make sure the wires are on in the correct way.

If you are 180* out, a quick way to test is to take your distributor cap and rotate it 180* and put it back on the distributor.

Good luck.

Ok you all were right about the being out 180 degrees. I got that part fixed right this time. But i noticed that at each end of the log there are plugs. Well i am missing one in the front. Not sure why i did not notice it before. What is the actual name of this plug? And is this something i can buy at a parts store?

Thanks

That would definitely do it. Make vacuum leak.

Usually called freeze plugs or casting plugs. You may have more luck going to a machine shop to get them.
