Better, but I'm really not copetent to view it. Tried several methods inc desk top placement and manipulation from there.
Do U need a 'drop base' a/c to close the hood or what additional Qs do U have sir?

:hmmm: I missed the mark on the correct install position for the 64 1/2 & 65 Mustang 170 & 200 inline six air cleaners the snorkel is supposed to point to the road ward side of car IE the Driver side and at a 90 degrees angle to the engine sorry for steering you wrong. :bang:

You have done some very nice detail work on your 65 engine compartment

Wonder why? Wasss up with ''65/6 200/170 needs that? It's not 'ram air' or anything...

Did it have that lill spun fiber filter somewhere in it (NOT @ the snorkle tho)? Or was that added in the '70s w/some kinda vac lines?

My thoughts are this was done so that there would be less dirt and dust sucked into the air cleaner or maybe just to get some cooler air away from the exhaust side. They were a very simple design just a sealed can with the replaceable air cleaner element, the snorkel was the only opening for air intake. Seams like if my memories are correct that the lid top also had the word "Front" in raised letters stamped into it, the engine size decal (170 or 200) would be placed so it was centered and facing the front of car when it's installed correctly.

Here some pictures and info on correct colors for a restoration of the early Ford Mustang six engines. Ford painted the assembled Engine long-blocks, IE block, head, and oil pan, all Black through end of 1965 year models, this included paint covering all the hardware (bolts etc). The valve covers were painted separately from the engine their color is one way to ID the engine size. The Valve Covers were installed near the end of engine assembly using natural metal bolts with special integral lock washers.

This is a 170ci six cylinder base engine as used in the 1964 1/2 Mustang's in the first 5 months of production. Info I have says it has a red valve cover and air cleaner but I remember them being more of an Orange as were the early 170 Falcon motors. The Valve cover bolts are a natural metal.

170ci valve cover Red ?
170ci air cleaner Red ?
170ci block, head, oil pan Black

Here pictured is a 200 six now the standard engine for the 1965 Mustangs. Looks much the same as the 170 it replaced, with the red valve cover and air cleaner. Valve cover bolts are natural metal.

The 1966 and later Ford engines were no longer color keyed to specific models all Ford engines were now painted Ford Corporate Blue (Dark Ford Blue). This was the new color for all Ford engines for 1966 and later. As before the entire Engine long block was painted after it's assembly and the valve covers were painted separate and than installed on the engine with the same natural metal bolts with the special integral lock washers as before.

This is the 1966 200 engine the air cleaner is made a little different from the 64 1/2 and 65 engines. Ford engines were now painted in the Dark Ford Corporate Blue starting in 1966, Valve cover bolts are the natural metal. The Sports Sprint models have a chrome air-cleaner housing, as did the 1966 Sprint 200, made available during Spring 1966.

Engine is complete now, first of all let me say thanks for all the help on getting the 170 up an running.Bad news, bad knock in the bottom back of lower side.It ran perfect, had to make sure everything was O.K. before I detailed an replaced everything.I installed new oil pump filter timing,Carb detailed engine, engine bay, Trans Primed oil with drill to get oil to top side.On the first crank it knocked right off the bat.Any idirs. Any help please.I want to keep it stock from factory as muck as possible, but sometimes you have to go with the flow.
Secount how big of a headake is it to V-8 itWould I have to change sterring spindles motor mounts, ect. Talk to me please

Did you rebuild that engine or just clean it up some?

Secount how big of a headake is it to V-8 itWould I have to change sterring spindles motor mounts, ect.

:hmmm: Yes almost everything will need to be changed over to at least the stock V8 chassis parts.

Just cleaned it up, no rebuild because it ran great before the detail. How about this fellows what is the newsest inline 6 that would change over?

R U sure it's shot?

A bump up to the 200 is good, 3 yrs after yours - in '69, they had a 250/4.1...
Folks on here can guide U on both. Lots use the same book as an intro & general knowledge (FPM)...

I think the last of the 200 were in 1982 Mustangs and 1983 or maybe 84 Fairmont & Zephers look for a 3.3 L engine in the Fox chassis. You will have to change oil pan and pickup tube to a front sump though. Why not also look into rebuilding your short block?

"...change oil pan and pickup tube to a front sump..."

Hey Bubs - how's dat done? Some have advised me to change/reverse the p/u tube on the 250 for when it goes in the bronk (also to weld/braze 2 different pans together, another issue) so as to draw better or avoid the frnt chunk. Whaddaya just flip it upside down (put the left bolt in the right & visa-versa)? Don't sound right...never seen one from that motor tho.

Best engine is 1975-1978 Maverick T code or 1975 to 1980 Granada T or B-code 3.3's. Straight bolt in with the modern C4, jatco, RUC or SROD that came with it. No issues with sump or dip stick

The grey rocker cover X-code 1983 Fox body Ford LTD and Fairmont was the last 3.3 in US. The sump and dip stick and oil pickup need to go to 1965 to 1980 X-shell from Falcon, Maverick Monarch Granda and bellhousing pattern will force you to use the automatic gearbox that came with it .

The blue 1978 -1980 T-code and 1981-1982 B is easier to fit as its usually a high mount starter block, and you can fit your existing 2.77 or a 3.03 transmission to it. Came in X-shell Granny, Monarchs as well as S-shell Foxes like the 78-82 Zeph, Stang, 1981 on Capri Cougar, 1981-1982 T-bird. Still needs to have the sump and dip stick and oil pickup swapped for anything in a Fox body.

Engine runs great except the knock, thought I was going to swap or rebuild,My wife( with some knogle of moter pin pointed the sound. With that I jacked it up put on stands an she started it an I started feeling aroung underneath. Very back rod cap was tapping the oil pan,Probley got bent by picking moter up an down to adjust chains for correct install. Any how I slept like a baby last night. Will order new pan an gasket set install an tune. Then to the interior Thanks fellows.,Wendell of Guntersville,Al.
