Air Cleaner Clearance?

Hey guys, I have been having trouble finding an air cleaner to fit my carb that will fit under the hood of my mustang. The previous owner took off the original autolite and put on a remanufacured carter yf. So my question is would a maverick air cleaner work on my engine? Thanks-Will

get some play-doh, make a cone about three inches tall, then put it on top of the carb and close the hood
it should give you a decent idea of the height you need, you should have at least four or five inches of clearance with a YF

this is a YF under the hood of a '67 Mustang
the air cleaner is from an Oz 250-2V which is about three inches tall, you can see there is about three or four inches of clearance

A YF will be close in an early Falcon or Mustang, they are a good bit taller than the other carbs. Any air cleaner you use will need to have a drop base. I was using a small 3" round air cleaner (like the kind people use on their 3x1 setups) before, but now I have a 14" round chrome one. I got the air cleaner and the adapter I needed (from 4 barrel down to the YF size) off the shelf at Autozone. The adapter needed a little trimming with a Dremel but it fits well and has about 2-1/2" of hood clearance.

Also a typical 'powerlock' tape measure sitting on the log works. Extend it up and then slowly close the hood down on it, it should just push it back down then open the hood and that will tell you how much room you have.

The YF 250 air cleaner from a Mav is the lowest I have found. The RBS is low also but does not offer enough clearance for the choke.

I have both a stock air cleaner that was on my old YF plus an aftermarket low profile 14" chrome open element air cleaner that should fit as well. These both were on my Maverick with a 250 motor and carter yf at one time. Both fit fine, the chrome unit was very close to the underside of the hood, but still fit. Send me a pm if you are interested in either one.
