whats up inliners,

I was just wondering how long i should take it easy on my car after a rebuild. though its not a complete rebuild its pretty damn close. i didnt bore out the cylinders, but i did hone them. and was curious how long i should wait before i can get on it when i need to? thanks inliners

should be 500 miles
after that the rings should be seated

now when to do the oil-changes... jeez, that'll become a long post

I would just add a word of caution if it is a fairly powerful engine dont do what I did and potter around like its only just idling. Be a bit flexible with the power and rpm especially when accelerating and slowing (use the gears with engine braking while slowing). This should all help to make it bed in better and more quickly.

The machinist who did the rebuild can tell you best... unless you did it yourself...

mine told me to keep it in a reasonable range and not push the redline... but drove normal and not to baby it. He also said downshifting and braking was going to get me there closer, just watch popping the clutch into too low a gear for a while.

After around 750 to 1200 miles he said go for it!

Very good advice. If the machinist doesn't know, you're in trouble.

Since you did the work yourself, and boring wasn't part of the rebuild, you only need to seat the rings before you 'drive it like you stole it'. With the machining tolerances used in most remanufactured engines today, break-in mileage is almost a thing of the past.

I'd say run 500 miles while constantly varying your rpm, and don't drive any extended highway miles until after 500 miles. After that, your rings should have seated, and you can run it however you want.

As to oil changes, some say change the filter after the first hour or two and then oil & filter at 500 miles. Another oil & filter change at 1500, and then every 3000 after that. YMMV.
