Cam issues

I have been trying to figure out my rough idle. If I turn the idle screw back to get the idle down to the 800 - 900 RPM range, the idle becomes very rough. I feel pretty confident that I need to go up in idle jet size, but I do not know if that is the cause of my rough idle. I took the car to a nearby mechanic and he told me is was mostly due to the cam that I have. I didn't think the cam was too radical, but I may have been wrong in that assumption. Any advice on what I can do to smooth out my idle?
Thanks,

You might have the cam timing off. If the cam is retarded it will make it idle rough. If its a tooth off at the cam its not half as bad if its a tooth off at the crank.
How much cranking compression do you have? How much vacum and is the vacum gauge needle steady at a idle?

I'll have to get a vacuum guage this weekend and a compression tester as well. I'll keep you all posted. The shop the rebuilt my motor has been very helpfull and more than willing to do any needed follow-up work for free.
I'll keep you all posted.
Thanks
Ted
