Carb problems

I am having the "bubbling, overflowing" gas problem. My mechanic suggested I install a phenolic spacer kit, which I just did today. I started my inline 6 200 (65 Mustang Coupe). It took awhile to get it started and it ran really rough and would not idle. It ran about 5 minutes with me revving it to keep it going. I shut it off and was looking over the carb with the air cleaner off. After about 15 seconds I heard bubbling and then gas started seeping out of the carb and onto the intake manifold. Here's the thing, the engine was wasn't even warmed up and it was a cool evening. The bubbling (boiling?) went on for a good 5-8 minutes. I'm really concerned about driving the car if gas is going to bubble out onto a hot manifold. Apparently the phenolic spacer was not the answer to this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think you likely have a problem with the float or the needle & seat leaking fuel for sure not boiling. This is also why it was hard to start fuel washing down the cylinders and fouling the plugs. Do you know when the last time the carb was rebuilt? If not then that would be the first place to start, good luck

That's seems logical. I don't know when the carb was last rebuilt. I bought the car last summer and the owner didn't know either. A friend of mine has a 1970 Mustang with a 289. He had the engine rebuilt with the original carb and ignition. He couldn't get it to run right. He order a reconditioned carb and Petronix ignition from his local parts store and it solved all of his engine issues and it now runs great. I'm thinking of doing the same. Do you know of a good, trustworthy source for a reconditioned 1-barrel carb? Or would you just go to a local parts store and have them order it? One local place I checked wanted over $600. for one, that seems pretty steep.
Thanks for you help.

Working as a mechanic for many years I always liked rebuilding them myself, if I didn't have time would sometimes buy rebuilds from NAPA. That was many years ago so have not looked at whats out there in rebuilds but at 600.00 that would be real high for a 1V. Have you looked at C.I.? I think they are rebuilding some carbs now and they have some new carbs of the based on the Holley 1904? Sure they can beat that carb price by about half. good luck

Events since last post on this subject.
1. Carb professionallly rebuilt
2. Installed it and it was still flooding profusely
3. Had it rechecked. Dunked the float to test it and it was fine.
4. Reinstalled it, still flooding - put gas all over the manifold - would not start.
5. Installed new fuel pump - still flooding
6. Installed a Mr. Gasket fuel regulator in the fuel line after the pump. Dialed it down to the "2" setting.
7. Fired right up and runs fine!

Also, when the carb was rebuilt I found out it's a Motorcraft carb and not the original. It's a mis-match with the Load-O-Matic distriutor. I have ordered a remanufactured 1968 distributor with Pertronix from one of the members on this forum. Can't wait to get it installed. It should make it run even better.

HMMM , LOL amazing what a pressure reg does :D should have the dist done by end of the week, you may want to try up to 4psi , drive the car on a hill and load it , or wait for the dist first .either way 3.5-4.5 works best
