Compression question

Hello All, Now that my Comet is on the road with a 200, I've got the old 144 up on the stand. When I turn the crank with a wrench, I can hear a sound like air escaping somewhere (like into the crankcase). Of course my first reaction is compressed air passing out from the combustion chamber, past the rings, into the case. When running, the motor used no oil, and had only nominal blow-by. My question: Is this possibly a normal sound? Does more air tend to seep out when the crank is being turned slowly and the motor not actually running? Thanks!
