Cost of milling head?

I have a 250 head I need to shave .075. Anybody know what the going rate is? I checked a local machine shop and they quoted me $80 to do it. Does that sound reasonable to you guys?

I was going to say around $75, so $80 isn't far off. But I live in MA, so things are expensive sometimes...not sure how it is in colorado

surface head at my machinist is $25.00. But that is for 4 passes, first pass at 0.001, next 3 passes at 0.003. Total of 0.01".

I imagine he would charge a lot more for 0.075, as that will be serious wear on the cutters.

The price is a bit subjective. Who's doing teardown and pre-clean of the head? What about reassembly of the valvegear after?

It cost me $70 to my head resurfaced taking off .010. I wanted to take off a lot more to get to compression down but was told this. One it would weaken the head too much for the amount I wanted to take off and second it would eliminate the possibility of being able to do any more work on it in the future if needed. Also you have to remove a lot more from a head than you do from a block to get the same compression result.

You get more benefit if you zero deck the block and take just little bit off of the head.
I am completely rebuilding my engine so everything was already apart in this wasn’t a problem. If your just working on the head a not taking the whole engine apart this would be a problem.

To deck the block it cost me $152, $80 for the first .010 and $3 for each extra .001, a total of .025

This was with everything taken apart. If you have them take everything apart and put back together it will be a lot more.

It was $80 to cut mine .075 That's with them doing all the other work valve job, surface exhaust side of head, etc.

If you're doing everything else recommended in the Schjeldahl's book then it all adds up!
