Crank Trigger Systems?

How does the crank trigger systems work? I understand the Hall Effect thing with the crank, but how does the spark get to the plugs? It has to go through a distributor still, right? If so, what kind of distributor and is there one that's available for our cars?

unless my brain is fried from being up too long, i'd think that a regular dizzy would work with minor modifications
if you have the DSII dizzy, take a look at the shaft and you'll see that it's got (what i believe) is basically the same system as the Hall sensor, except it most likely uses a magnet instead of an optical sensor to read when the "spokes" around the shaft are close enough to trigger the spark
i don't believe that it has anything to tell exactly where the crank is at at any one time (such as if the #1 cyl was at TDC)

and i'm rambling and trying to figure this out without enough background info, and without enough sleep
but i'd love to have someone tell me where i got it wrong

I really would like to see a gut-busting effort to get CAS onto our sixes. If it can be done with just one specific part (a new balancer/damper) and assorted OTC stuff, we're through possibly the hardest part of running these old engines like modern ones.
