I see different part numbers for engines starting in 1975. Any particular reason? These are cheaper than the older ones, so I would like to get these if possible

I think so. at my autoshop class, we have an old Ford shop manual that covers from 1968-1978 cars, and covers are 6cyl's pretty well ( I'v arleady used it for crank specs and rod bolt torque specs, and the block hasn't begun to go togther yet), I'll check and see if anything changed tomorrow.
yes, early mains are fully grooved. Post 5/1/75 are only grooved on top. I have only used the early ones, and never had a bearing problem. Scared to change.
The only other difference I've seen on sets is the thrust bearing. Some of the later sets only have a thrust surface on one shell, not both. Might not be an issue with an automatic, but with a manual trans you would want both bearing halves to have a thrust surface.
So...I have a '65 block. The later ones would work correctly, right?
I haven't pulled the engine yet, so I haven't even looked at them yet to see if they have grooves or not. I'm replacing the crank and rods (cheaper than machine work), so I know I need new main bearings too.
I didn't see any grooves on the ones I looked at when I took apart the junk '68 I have. Are the grooves just to keep them from spinning? Do they fit in corresponding grooves inside the main caps and block?
Well, the point is moot anyhow. Found the early style bearings for 12.99 on ebay and snapped 'em up. Looks like I'm going to be pulling the motor Saturday but I'm sure they won't be here by then. Oh, well.
