Dip Stick Hole Plugged Up

Howdy all.

The 170 I am messing around with has a Bronco oil pan on it, and the
old dip stick went into the side of that pan.

I am planning on putting a Mustang pan back on it, and using the usual
dip stick location.

The block does have a port for the normal dip stick tube, but there
is something blocking it. It is difficult to tell if there is just a plug in
there, or if I need to drill it out somehow.

Has anyone ever seen this? Is it probably a thin plug that I can pop out?

Thanks,

-Zim

Not on a Ford, but if you've got the driver's side dipstick and tube and can get a drill bit the right size (the tube should be a good press fit), I'd go ahead and drill it and see. Might start with a smaller bit, just to see what you've got.

I'd think the only critical issue is the final depth of the dipstick into the pan.

Assuming he matches the pan, dipstick, dipstick tube, and oil pump pickup properly (i.e. -- all from the same application) I would think everything should work just fine, but I'm no expert.

I thought about this a little more.

I am going to have the pan off this weekend. I will try to tap out
the plug from the inside first just to see what happens.

I do have the tube, pan and dipstick all off of the 200 so I plan to use that stuff on the 170 now.

Addo's correct-it's just a small thin plug that will drive right out from the inside. Your 200 stuff should fit right on....if I recall correctly the height of the standard front left dipstick tube is 3" high above the block surface it seats in. No sweat!

Make sure your oil pump pickup is compatible with that oil pan. If you aren't sure, then find somebody who knows more about this than I do.

:)

Jeez - didn't think of the oil pump...

Looks like its back to the parts store for me...

The stock dipstick tubes had a rib in the side that would serve as a stop when it reached the hole flange.

Also, make sure you get the gaskets for the oil pump and pickup. If these are not installed, you will end up sucking air instead of oil.
