drag racing with a turbo question

Hi, my friend has a inline six that is turbo'd. He seems to have a problem getting enough boost off the line and his 60' times are awful. How do you get the turbo cars to launch hard? Thanks----Tom

There's a few ways.

If difficult with a stick shift. But a two-step will help a bunch. I was able to leave with about 10lbs. of boost in my ol' '86 5.0 Stang.

Assuming you have a automatic tranny you'll need a higher stall converter. But a stocker can work.
A two-step is very handy. And a transbrake even better!

In our case we have all three. When Kelly pre-stages she brings up the RPM to around 2500 or so and rolls into the beams. Activates the trans-brake/two-step and pushes the gas. The longer you sit there, the more boost you'll make (up to a point!). She's able to achieve 6-8lbs.

The trick is getting the same amount of boost everytime. So staging sequencing and duration is very important.

Funny thing about this question most of the people a whle back running the turbo sixes in street trim were having problems with launching under boost cause it would just roast the tires and the engine has enough torque down low to kind of compensate in a lighter car :).

Great answer too will, I kind of wondered about this but i'll be driving a stick

Oh, Okay. He is running a five speed. In a toyota celica with a supra straight six. I'll tell him about the two step. Would he be better to go with an automatic? Thanks for all the help.------Tom

No, he can leave the stick in there! The car will be faster anyways! And way more fun!
When I had a stick in my '86 I had a button on the steering wheel operated by the left thumb. So when the lights dropped I moved both my left leg and my left thumb at the same time.
It worked pretty good! I would cut lights in the .003 to .020 range most of the time.
Using this method I would leave with around 10lbs. of boost with my turbo'd 5.0.

Will

So that was with the two step? Also, where can you get a two step and how much are they? Thanks for all the info.-----Tom

Tom,
MSD Ignition probably sells the most popular one.
You can buy their stuff at Summit Racing or Jegs or even at Checker.
