exhaust system?

I've been working on my old Maverick for quite some time now, and I think that I can finally see a bit of light at the tunnels end. I've still got lots of cosmetic work ahead of me but the engine is mostly put back together, and should be ready to install any day now. The engine I'm using is a rebuilt 250 I6, which will be bolted to a 4 speed toploader. The motor has been bored 30 over with the compression ratio of 9.5 to 1. It's got a performance cam from classic with a 264/274 profile, and lobe center is 110. I've had the head ported/polished and modified for a weber dgv progressive 2v carb, and I've got a single outlet header from mustangs unlimited. All in all its a pretty mild build, but should still be lots of fun. My question is what to do about the exhaust system? I'd like it to have a nice healthy rumble without being obnoxious. Should I scrap the 6 to 1 header in favor of a dual outlet header? Should I keep the 6 to 1 and just run a big 3 inch single pipe, or maybe split it out to duals? What type of muffler will sound best?
Any help will be appreciated, as this is my first ever 6 cylinder build.
Thanks

Since you have a header, suitable muffler(s) should get you the six' nice healthy rumble . Unrestricted - oversize system may not effectively modify exhaust sound across throttle position.

... opinion backed up with conjecture... :

> On a 250/3X2 header I tried dual 2-1/2" NAPA truck mufflers and sounded... like old truck. Cherry bomb glasspacks droned and gave me a headache. "Turbo" mufflers rumbled low at cruise but raspy under accel'. Cable' exh dump was interesting, recommended by the trad' crowd, I'm using "Smithy" long mufflers for drivable but distinct six-with-attitude sound.

Have Fun

For one take on this - a thread on muffler choices:

"New exhaust on my son's 62...he aint happy..."

in THIS forum. I attempted to get specific descriptions of sound... difficult. There R some audio (&/or vid) offers as well w/that thread.
Good luck. It's so personal a choice, and not easy to describe a sound. Best bet - ask some 1 when U happen to hear what U like or - learn the 4 - 5 designs and experiment (I'd need to return the unwanted product for refund to afford this option but think it possible to go this route).
My choice was the oem w/a 1/4 inch hole (1/8 wuz too sm) reminded me of the '60s alphas and fiats I had. Nice rap and when off the peddle and descending a hill or decelerating the individual cyl could be heard popin. It was not loud, even when U got on it ,however, which wuz just right 2 me. A nice sound but no cop magnet or Mr/Ms citizen wavin @ me, but not w/all their fingers...
