Sorry for the delay, I finally got the 99 mustang out of the garage so I could get to the front of the 65. Here is what I found comparing the stock 2 row thickness to the 3 Row Modine offered by Mustangs Unlimited (I'm sure the rest are similar)
There is about 1/4 inch difference in depth as measured from the mountin flange between the two (3 row being thicker). The mounting brackets (around the cores) are the same thickness between the 2, but the 2 row core is recessed a little from that where the 3 row goes right up to the mounting bracket depth.
WITH a 3 row, 1.25" fan spacer, and stock fan, I have 1.25" of clearance between the closest point of the fan and the radiator. I remember that my flex fan had slightly less clearance, but still not much less.
In conclusion, there is only a .25" difference between fan clearance for the 3 row Modine and the 2 row stock radiator.
