Firewall thickness question...

I've got my acclerator pedal and linkages removed from the car. They were held in place with metal screws (loose fit, onehad a wire wrapped on it to make it fit better). I'd like to re-install with nut/bolt combo when I put it back together to make it secure.

How thick is the firewall where the accelerator linkage bolts onto it? Is it a double layered piece of metal or single layer?

Should I be able to get at both sides to get a bolt started?

Top image is where pedal linkage comes through the firewall (bolts are just barely in the holes they came out of). Bottom is pasenger side bracket connection point with two bolts removed.

pretty sure it is single or double layer of sheetmetal. I would think figure out what you need for the mount+washer+nut and add .25" or so to it. this will give you some for the thickness and to have a couple threads showing. does it need to bolt through any carpet or sound deadener?

a bunch of fiberglass looking yellow fber came out on the threads of one of the screws, so yes, it probably has to go through some deadener.

well you could put it back together leaving one screw out and use a helper and a hunk of wire to find the hole depth (crawl inside and hold it threw from teh inside and have them mark with a marker)

other suggestion is a few different lengths of bolts and find what works

I have done exactly what you are doing here and was successful in replacing those screws with small bolts, washers, and nuts. There is a layer of insulation attached to the inside of the firewall to contend with but I just stuck a length of stiff wire through one of the holes from the engine side to find the location on the inside.

For the small extra expense, I always go Nyloc and stainless on these applications, now. If it has to come apart again, you'll appreciate it. Also an interesting read about your firewall insulation. We got the woolly stuff too, but it was punched out like the fibreboard overlays so brackets and such sat flat against the steel.

It's single layer sheetmetal. You can always go up a size in sheetmetal screws and you'll be fine. When I put the V-8 linkage in, it uses different holes so I just tapped new ones.
