flexplate washer

A while ago I started getting all the stuff to rebuild my "new" 200 and the c4 to go with it. I had gotten the correct washer(?) that bolts to the flrexplate or so I thought. It doesn't line up with the holes. I know they are not spaced in a regular pattern but these are about 1/4" or more out of the line of the holes when I get them matched. In short the thing is too big!!! Is there more than one size for the 200? The block in question is a C_OE, 2nd digit not cast in, but the head says C3OE so I deduced it to be out of a 63/64 Fairlane. It's a 4 main block. I've got other stuff on order for the c-4 but if I have to backtrack on this I need to know the correct part number. HELP!

Four Main? Blank C number on the casting? Flexplate washer too big?

Are you sure its a 200? maybe a C2OE-6015-C casting.

Might be a 62 fairlane 200, but have more in common with a 170.

If you can scrounge a 170 washer up, I'd try that.

Checked Schjeldahl's book;

"In 1962 Fairlanes started using a 200 ci that had four main bearings. The 200 had a longer stroke and a larger bore than the 170 ci. These engines were used in some 1964 Falcons and Mustangs."

I think the washer you have is for a typical later seven bolt main 200, which would have a different crank.

And just a friendly check, you have solid lifters and adjustable rocker arms too? I think the hydraulic lifters came with the 7 bolt main redesign.

Measured the bore - its a 200. It has hydraulic lifters and non adjustable rockers. 5 freeze plugs, small water pump, etc. But my mind begins to wonder if I got the washer for a 250 by mistake - that could be the problem. I'll get back to y'all. Thanks. Oh and by the way David weighed in on the possibility that this is one of those "Ford surprises" when I first mentioned the casting numbers.

Yep its a 200, but I read that entry that the '62 200 was a factory bored and stroked 170. I don't think it worked that well so they did the total redesign with 7 mains and hydraulics.

Really, I'd try a 170 washer... I think the 200 and the 250 are the same..

Although the hydraulic thing has me perplexed. are there adjusting nuts on the rocker arms?

The 250 does NOT have the same crank as the 200. It is larger in diameter at the rear flange. It also does not use the flexplate setup like the 200. You can bolt up any correct C4 flexplate to any 144, 170 or 200 as they have the same configuration. Where did you get the washer?

The washer(torque ring) goes on only one way and remeber not only to rotate it but also to flip it over and rotate. If that does not work, you have a mismatched part.

I don't think you could get a C4 until 1964....

And... looking at the block casting list, only the 1962 fairlane 200 had something close to that combination of casting letters...

So... I suspect HL maaay have a 200 that was meant to mate to a ford-o-matic or early cruise-o-matic....

again, I'm trying to help solve the mystery, not challenge anyones experience. I'm certainly not trying to say I know everything.

Does anyone have an early (pre 1964) 144-170-200 and a latter (1964 on) 170-200 lying around to compare the crank and flexplate?

I may be going to a mustang junkyard in the valley tomorrow.

If so HL, I'd be happy to ask.

For the flexplate washers

Looks like the 144-170-200 have a 2 3/4" circle or pitch.

the 250's have a 3" circle or pitch.

So my early late theory was bogus.

Still I think you have a very unique core youre working with - cool!

does that make any sense with what you are looking at?

I plan to put the 200 in my 65 with a proper 65 bellhousing/c4 combo since I disliked the sluggishness of the ford-o. I had just picked this one up cheaply,. As far as the washer - it came with the 0 weight ring gear\flex plate thrown in for my six by the seller. The flex looks like it fits a 250 since my bellhousing is smaller so it is possible Ithe washer is for it the 250 also. Just checking things first before I pull the tired motor/tranny combo "measure twice cut once" Thanks one and all.

to my knowledge, I have not seen a torque ring on a 250 flexplate. It uses the zero balance plate as does the early 260, 289.
