Harmonic Balancer

Is there a certain way I have to put my rebuilt balancer on? This is the first time for me and my dad replacing one of these. Do I have to line it up like the old one was?

The end of the crank has a woodruff key paid into it and the harmonic balancer should have a notch cut in it for the key.

You should be able to slide balancer onto end of crank then line up the notch to the key and thread bolt on and pull the balancer onto end of crank when you tighten the bolt.

Make sure to inspect the rubber between the inside and outside of the balancer. If it is torn or chunks are missing order the correct replacement one from Classic Inlines.

Its common after years of use and neglect for the centers to shift and the timing marks to be off.

this is somewhat dangerous as you can strip out the crankshaft by pulling the balancer onto the shaft with the center bolt
it's best to get an actual balancer installer, you should be able to get one from autozone if you don't have one

bring in your center bolt so you can verify the threads will work

I've always used a balancer puller but never a balancer installer.

And my balancer puller screwed up the threads in the end of my crank which I had to get chased with a tap when the crank was turned.

Wow, that is actually the first one that I have seen come apart! Have seen them twisted and crooked, but not two piece.

Rubber was found in the driveway and the ring fell off when we shut the hood after finding out the balancer was making a clunking noise.

LOL

"I think your balancer is broke"
"Why?"
"I dont think its supposed to clunk like that"
"Any way to diagnose it?"
*poke* *poke* "CLUNK (balancer in two pieces)
"Yup...its broke"

The balancer and pulley are one and the same. There's a rubber ring between the inner and outer portions of the pulley.
not always
on mine there was an outer pulley, and the inner pulley held the balancer ring

had a balancer on a chebby 4.3L do the same
