head bolt washers

if using stock head bolts..do you use a washer,if so what kind and where do you get them

if i remember correctly the stock config had no washers but someone should confirm this. i bought ARP bolts for my head and they recommending using washers with their bolts. so i put washer on with that. they added the thickness of the washer to the bolt length.

actually, they subtracted the tickness of the washer to the bolt length,,,isnt that what you are trying to say...so the bolts dont bottom out after decking?

i measured my stock ones, called arp with those dimensions. they told me that i should use washers with their bolts. so they added the thickness of the washer to the lengths i had measured, that way the net length of the bolts from arp would go the same distance down as the stock ones. so i got bolts and washers from ARP, i used their bolts, and the bolts i got were a little longer than the stock ones.

You can buy a "Grade 8 washer". There are no-name brands, as well as ARP and the like. Please note these are NOT at all like hardware store all-purpose washers. They are heat treated and consistent thickness, and you generally have a choice between outside diameters. I paid maybe 40¢ each...

Personally, I find it hard to see where the benefit in a name brand washer is...

The reason you want to use washers under the head bolts are if you decked the block or milled the head excessively. If you dont, you risk blowing a head gasket.

Mine has been decked .040 and the head has been milled .080 so I had to run washers on mine because the bolts were bottoming out in the block and I kept blowing head gaskets because I couldnt torque the head down tight enough.

Use Mr Gasket (part number) #87 7/16 header bolt washer.

i bought from ARP because they suggesteed it and it was easy to just order them from ARP right then and there. i think they were like .60 a piece, not so expensive. i hope it didn't sound like i was making a big endorsement of them?

Lubing under the washer and under the bolt head is important.

I carry all the ARP inline six head (and main) washers, I just don't list them sperately. Price varries from .61-.66 cents per. Postage would be minimal.
