I have a 1966 mustang coupe with a stock, but rebuilt 200 I-6 and a C-4. Im wanting to do a performance build, yet it's going to be a daily driver. I am aiming for a 1/4 mile time of mid to low 14s, yet keep it as driveable as possible. I'm planning on getting a T-5 in, plus side exaust.
any tips on what I should do would be great.

first tip, check out the shop page, you can find it from the homepage, second tip, buy the performance book, can be found here or from the shop page
actually, you might want to reverse those... buy the book first then go for the other stuff...
after that, wander through the old posts...

enjoy the trip

If you lurk around a bit and check out people's home pages...you'll see some very interesting set ups that can turn out some good power.

Buy the book (another shameless plug)...it has a lot of information in it.

The T-5 is the upgrade I'm the happiest with so far. It is so much better then my old 2.77 3 speed.

To hit 14.5 in the 1/4 with a 2800-2900lb car, you'll need at least 185 HP at the rear wheels. Figure a 25-30% drivetrain loss and you're looking at needing a 225 hp engine. That's doable, but requires some work.

The easiest route would be nitrous if keeping it streetable is a big consideration. A 100 hp shot will get you close to your goals. The car will run hard on the bottle, but like a stocker otherwise. I'd only attempt this on a good engine. A worn out oil-burner will not like that much NOx.

The other route is a turbo. Not done often, but a simple draw thru blowing even as little as 6psi will nearly get you to that level of power. There are no kits, though, so everything has to be fabricated. An IHI or T3 turbo from a Turbo Coupe or Merkur XR4Ti would be a good match for a mild setup like this. REad a couple of good books on turbos to get some ideas.

If Nitrous or a turbo is too radical, then you'll need to get serious with the motor. First, the head. Serious porting, a lot of changes to induction with a 2 or 4bbl carb, and headers. Then a cam. At least 270, maybe 280 to get over the 1hp/ci barrier. Headers go without saying. This is the least driveable setup because it will have a lumpy idle and poor fuel mileage.

200+ hp can be done, but there is no magic bolt on to make it happen.

I'd say for good performance and the ability to still be used as a daily driver, I would look at the following things:

Exhaust:
Headers (dual outlet)
dual exhaust (2" - 2 1/2")
Performance muffler(s) (flowmasters, etc.)

Ignition:
HP ignition coil (40,000 volt Pertronix Flame thrower or other)
Electronic ignition (pertronix breakerless ignition system)
Distributer (lots of different ones used by all of these guys)

Tranny:
The T-5 you are talking about sounds great - will provide a lot better gears

Engine:
Performance rebuild (if needed) - (push rods, valve springs, rings, etc. etc)
Mill and deck the head
(possibly a performance head - aussie or other - lots of help here on that)
bigger valves (intake, etc)
3 angle valve job
hardened seats (for unleaded gasoline)

A good 2 or 4 bbl carb (Weber or Holly)

There is a LOT of great experts on here to talk to, and a lot of really nice sites to pool idead from, feel free to check out mine to get some ideas, and to see some of these things I just mentioned.

Hey guys
wow didn't expect this much help! I've decided that I'm going to try to get as much power from the engine as possible before adding nitrous/ turbo. I was thinking about getting new headers, heads and carb to start myself off. Whats this "Aussie" head people have been talking about?

So theyre just heads that allow better breathing? They sound like they are rare..are they? If not is there anywhere I could get one?

they aren't rare right now, but they are getting to be that way, check out the shop, look under AzCoupe's page, good stuff there
BTW - last i heard, he was working with someone to produce a supercharger for the small sixes
