Gday all, my name is Bob and I'm from the Blue Mountains in Australia. I'm into Hot Rods and love inline sixes, and have had 2 six cyl powered 27T Ford Roadsters in the past.

I'm just getting into these motors and found this forum recently.

I've just been given what I've been told is a 200ci motor and 2 speed box. Can anyone tell me how to identify which year the motor is and what capacity, so I can decide what goodies to put on it.

Thanks

Bob

Bob,

First, welcome to the forum! You will be able to find out almost anything thay you can think of on a ford six here. There are also a bunch of your fellows from kangaroo land who are regular members here too.

Both your block and your head will have a casting number on it. The one on the block will look something like C5DE 6015. The first two characters will tell you what year it is. The first letter id the decade that it was built. 'C' is for 1960's, 'D' for the 70's and 'E' for the 80's. The second character is the actual year in that decade. So, a C5 would be a 65. Another thing to look at is the number of freeze plugs on the block. If there are 3 then it's a 4 main block, and if there are 5 then it's a 7 main block. I don't believe that any of the 144's or 170's had a 7 main, and only the very early 200's had a 4 main. You might want to do a search on the board, because this is a subject that comes up frequently.

I hate to nitpick, but doesn't the part number indicate the last year of revision? Such as if your engine was a C5DE, that would mean the last time the engine was redesigned or new molds made would have been 65. But that revision may have been used for afew years after that.

In Aussie speech, "Freeze plug" = "Welsh plug". It rarely freezes here.

Yes, the cast number indicates the year of initial design - but we had revisions in 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 68, 69, and 71 to begin with. So it'll be a close enough guess!

Cheers, Adam.

Why the red face? I'd have NFI about half the things that make your country tick.
