i got my granada running kindof

when i run it which isn't much right now it idle's around 1400 - 2000 rpms i know my timing is off but i think the carbs are tuned around where they should be but could my timing be the cause of it reviving that high?

also it backfires alittle bit

any help is greatly appreciated

How does it run with vacuum disconnected? I suspect the temp sensitive vacuum valve that swithes vacuum to the carbureter. There should be a valve around your thermostat housing with three hoses. One goes to the carb, one goes to the intake manifold, and one goes to the dizzy. This valve is designed to shoot full manifold vacuum to the dizzy when the engine overheats. If the carb and manifold hoses are switched, or the valve leaks internally, it will feed manifold vacuum to the dizzy at idle, and you'll have a heck of a time lowering the idle. Try hooking the hose from the carb directly to the dizzy.

ok so what about if i dont have any vaccum running to the thermostat?

what do you think i should do

im not sure if there is 2 or 3 spots to connect vaccum hoses

so i should connect a vaccum from the thermostat to which carb since i have the tri carb setup

and connect another to the dizzy?

i really really appreciate your help

The valve in question is usually screwed into the top of the thermostat housing. It has three nipples, the midle one going to the distributor's vacuum port.
Do you have a vacuum line from one of the carbs to the dizzy? One of the tri-power folks here can best tell you about your carb setup.

i looked when i got home from work and i only have 2 nipples coming out of the t stat housing and i didn't do exactly all the work on my car and i do not believe there is a vaccum going from the dizzy to the carb i believe the guy set it up wit a vaccum from the fire wall to the carb and the vaccum to the carbs also comes from the fire wall

i assume that u mean that by 'hooked up to the firewall' u mean that there is a strip of vacuum ports...if none of the hoses from the tree of ports is connected to the manifold then its not doing anything...basically all its for is adding extra hoses that need vacuum..i use mine for the tranny, but dont actually need it since i have 2 unused ports on the manifold tree. Do what BIGREDRASA said and hook up the hose from the distributer to the carb...if u dont notice any difference in hooking it up to the carb, then hook it up to manifold vacuum. make sure tough that at least one hose from the manifold tree (should be 3 vacuum ports) is hooked up to the strip of ports on the firewall...after that u can add what u want to the strip.

i no longer have a manifold vaccum because of the offy tri carb setup

if this helps any

so i should run the vaccum from the carb to the dizzy?

what about the vaccum ports on the t stat?

u dont need the vacuum tee thing...heck..i never even had one when i got my engine...just plug all the holes and run the hose from the distributer to the middle carb. but to lower the idle speed, just turn out the idle speed screws..u should get a multiport vacuum gauge though for synching (however u spell it) the carbs...three carbs is pretty hard to tune by ear..but i have heard of how to do it...but i dont recommend it.

so plug up the t stat and run the dizzy to the middle carb?

i just have it tuned alittle by ear but i dont have the timing set so my friend is going to stop by tomorrow to help me work on the car and set the timing

wht is the best thing to plug up the t stat housing with?

The temperature controlled valve on the T-stat housing won't need plugging, as long as there are no hoses going to it. The hose to the Dizzy needs to be connected to a carb port which has no vacuum at idle, and an increase in vacuum as you crack the throttle. That is, assuming that you have a dizzy with a single vacuum port.
If you have no intake manifold vacuum port, what are the vacuum "trees" on the firewall connected to? Make sure you have caps or plugs on all unused ports on the vacuum manifold(s) on the firewall. Also, what is your PCV valve connected to? If it is not properly connected and inserted into the valve cover, it will cause idle probs. I have tuned dual carbs on Volvos and Mercedes with a vacuum gauge, by fiddling with the carbs in small steps. It should be possible with trips, but still a slow, painful process.

the vaccum tree on the firewall is connected to the carbs, dizzy, brake master cylinder, a vaccum ball and i believe that is it IIRC.

i believe i do have a single port dizzy

but like i also said b4 i know my timing is off so that may be a big part of it as well?
also i have my pcv valve in the vavle cover but no vaccum hooked to it or to the oil cap as of right now

thanks for all of ur help

That is some interesting vacuum setup you have.
The only thing that should be connected to the ported vacuum of the carb is the dizzy. 8)
First thing is to set the timing with the vacuum to the dizzy plugged. Then, you need to figure a way to tap into intake manifold vacuum for the brakes. I can't imagine what kind of power brakes you have, with the setup you have.
Are you sure the vacuum connection you have is to the carb(s) and not an adapter plate at the base? Can you post or e-mail a picture of your carb/vacuum setup? :?

i cant see timing being so far off that it would make 1000 Rpm difference...although i've never dealt with a tri carb setup...how are the idle speed screws set...do u need to adjust all three so they're the same?

ditto

my friend came over and help me get the idle down some, wit the dizzy vaccum hooked up to the t stat housing and adjusting the dizzy we got it down to around 1000 or so but i am told i have some vaccum leaks but i will try to borrow a digital camera and post some pics for u

thanks
