I'm a bit confused! I see everyone installing these cool air intakes on their engines but anyone putting a 3x1 intake on their IL6 talks about the need to heat the intake. Doesn't this defeat the purpose?

You still need a little bit of heat under the carbs to help vaporise the fuel dropplets as they leave the carb. This improves drivablity and econmey.

In a turbo app, when you compress something like air and fuel your going to make heat. The intake charge already has to flow through the head which is heated to around 180* with the coolant. A cooler outside temp helps reduce the intake air temp but when it's already 95 to 100 out the air and fuel will be right at 160 by the time it hits the combustion chamber. Then you need to add the raise in temp when you add 12 lbs of boost. Tack on another 100 to the 160 and now your looking at 260. This is where the intercooler comes in. If you can reduce the temp back down to 190 or so you just added 15 more HP's.
