It will constrict airflow. You'll actually lose efficiency. Read some of Rancheroman's comments about the "cold air induction" scoops versus taking air from near the cowl. In fact, it's why cowl vents (a) flow so well and (b) when leaky, leak so well. Lots of air pressure there - it's free; use it!

Purpose of the intercooler is to cool the air after the compressor heats it up. In this cae, a normally aspirated car is already pulling in an air charge that is at an ambient temperature lower than is normally achievable with the intercooler. The intercooler uses either air or engine coolant to cool the air charge. Ambient air temp is typically the lowest temp that an intercooler could approach.
id concider the ram air setup also. i dont knwo the difference in pressure from the cowl to the front of the car. but i like my ram air setup. you could even install a small flapper for the colder days.
