Is the modern Aussie I6 4.0 available as a crate motor?

No, the motors are only available from wrecks.

Expect to pay up to AUD$12000 for a wrecked new turbo six (the whole car - depends on saleability of interior), and AUD$2000-2500 for the driveline off a 2-3 year old single cam vehicle. This would be with all sensors, dash, etc. Take about a third off these figures to get US dollars.

For easier retrofits, there are some options with mid-90s motors.

First, Ford Australia has NEVER gone away from the inline six, it did drop the V8 for a while, but the six has always been there, in its variuos forms.
As to "crate motors" you could by any of the current production engines off the shelf as parts, cost is probably higher than you would be prepared to pay.
The currect DOHC six is electronicly very sofisticated and I doubt you get any aftermarkect ECU capable of operating it, so Id drop that idea. The earlier SOHC sixes even the VCT engines are redily available used.
