Let's see them - heatsinks

How big of a heatsink do you need (anyone know for sure) for the HEI module? Right now I have a 1/4" barstock about 6" long. I had a CPU heatsink, but the module wouldn't fit on it, so I removed it.

On my F250 I used chunk out of bottom of a junked cast aluminum skillet.

On my Ranger I just used some cast aluminum bracket that Ford had used for some crap that no longer existed on the OEM engine. I never saw the weight or strength advantage of aluminum brackets over well engineered stamped steel brackets but car makers went for aluminum bigtime in the 80s.

here's mine
it hasn't failed so far, i was able bend that by hand, it's maybe 1/8th of an inch thick

Dang, did you polish that thing? Can't even see the metal with that shine 8)
it was painted, i just took a 3M abrasive disc and cleaned all the paint off before i put it on, i wanted to make sure i had a good ground (the screws holding the ignition module down need to be grounded, make sure the rest is as well)

but yeah, the flash is bad
i looked around to find a decent pic, but didn't really have one

if you happen to have a junk car stereo laying around, youll find a nice heat sink inside, works very well for this.

Mine is just bolted to a flat plate also with some di-electric grease between the module and aluminum.

Ended up running to the "Electronics Super Discount Store" today during lunch. Man, that stuff has got to be 20 years old...

Anyways, for $2.00 I picked up a pretty good looking heatsink. We'll see how it works.

I had one that was a little bigger than the module & about 1/2" high to tip of fins... no good. I had two so I doubled them up, no good!

Now I have one that is about 2" wide by about 4" long, base plate is about 4-5mm thick & the fins are about 2" high.... that sorted it! Very cheap from an electronics outlet. They were random stock they had.

The big one I have is the Trapezoid one (gold colour) for $3.
