Log head mod and 3 carbs

2 part question:

1) Have any of you popped the plugs out of the ends of the intake, on a log head, and bored the intake larger?

2) If you are running the Offy or Clifford 3 carb adaptor, is it better to run 3 larger carbs with a progressive linkage to bring in the outboard carbs as the rpms rise OR would 3 smaller carbs running equally, like one big 3bbl, be the better choice?

Howdy J:

1. Yes, but not with much success. You didn't say which head you are working with, but if it is a '69 or before, it is easiest to just go to a later head and enjoy not only a larger intake tract, but larger intake valves and hardened seats. We did some measuring on an E0 head this week and it may have the largest intake tract volume yet. More measuring is necessary to confirm. More intake tract volume is really only necessary for larger engines and higher rpm work. Smaller volumes seem to work on velocity. The biggest gain on early heads is in opening up the one barrel carb hole and more cfm.

2. Either or both, your choice. Some prefer a larger center and smaller end carbs for better leave and transitions. Others have preferred the smaller center and larger ends for better idle, MPG and driveability. The coolest looking to my eye is three early glass bowled Holleys. Whatever you chose the key will be getting the system to seal and getting it to work together.

Good luck.

An E0 head is the later casting "E" refers to the decade of the 80s, 0 frefers to the year. EO = 1980, or one of the last casting for the FoMoCo 200s.

Im going with a weber two barrel in the middle and ones on the outside and see how it works. Just trying to have fun with it.

I don't think that would work very good. It might be ok for the streight run but what about where the intake runs to the cylenders.

if i think i know what your talking about...that would be awesome. would u drill and tap the holes then weld a box to a pipe to fit on both ends, then mount the carbs on the boxes? that might work pretty awesome i think.
