Log temp & epoxy

Anyone have any estimates as to how hot the top of the log can get while driving? I searched for it but the only post I found said 180 degrees F.

I'm wanting to use some epoxy putty on the top of the log to fill a few gaps between the log and my Offy adapter. The epoxy I already have is good to 300 degrees F. Will this be enough?

Thanks!

Thanks for the long answer  . I'm just looking for some reassurance that the epoxy won't fail due to temp issue. Any idea what temp the log typically reaches while driving?

When I first picked up my '63 wagon, I powerwashed the engine and succeeded in blowing a hole through a small rusty "freeze plug" located behind the exhaust manifold on the log head. For a short term fix, I mixed up some Epoxy from a tootsie roll type quick epoxy. Surprisingly, the epoxy I pushed into the rusty freeze plug survived the five years I ran it and the engine was removed for other reasons and still runs fine.

Curing epoxy still gives me headaches since I worked in a factory where it was always in the air.

as i switch off my log head engine and watch the mechanical temp guage i have - on a hot day at the thermostat cover it gets up to 115 deg C (240degF).

the engine runs at about 92 -98 deg C but its when you switch off that the heat soak send the water temp rising .

so at aguess the log would reach about the same temp as the water jacket/block

thus any epoxy would have to have a good margin above that for non failure.

what epoxy are you using ?
accordsing to website - JB weld supposedly good for 500deg F

I used JB weld on my intake. twice.

I used Quik Steel on my intake once, and its still there. The jb-weld was cracking causing leaks, and the quik steel has held up under boost too. I just got an infared thermometer but my car isnt operating at the moment. dang.

I've got some epoxy putty from MasterPlumber. Says it's good to 300*F (149*C). So 240* is getting a bit close. JB weld website says their epoxy stick is good up to 300* as well. There may be other types that are higher temp, but I haven't found any stick types that have a much higher rating than 300*.
