Materials For Manifold

Intake or exhaust?

Intake, aluminum is fine. Exhaust, cast iron or mild steel.

what exactly are you looking to do?
forge one?
get some pipe and weld up your own?
other?

Haven't done it in a while, but I used to buy steel exhaust tube U-bends real cheap thru J.C. Whitney's catalog. Hacksawed the shapes I wanted from the U-bends and gas-welded them into exhaust or intake manifolds. With an intake manifold, you could braze instead of weld, if you feel more confident about avoiding pinhole air leaks that way. The flange(s) of the manifold should be one continuous length of steel while you are fabricating the manifold; after that you can cut it so as to have individual flanges. When you're done, get the flanges milled flat. Good cheap fun.

Oops, I forgot to say that last time I looked, Whitney carried stainless exhaust pipe and U-bends, too, and cheap.

I'm designing a fuel injection manifold for an MGC with steel tubing. Kind of depends on what you have available- are you looking for a casting or a fabrication? Do you have a sasting house available, or can you cast at home?

Do you have TIG or MIG equipment?

The most practical material for a 1 off is material you can work with at home or at work
