hey everyone, i've got a 65 mustang with a 6 cylinder 200 in it...recently there has been some noise coming form the engine, i wanna call it a knocking, but i dont want to jump to the conclusion of it being preignition or something....here are some details...it only happens once in awhile, and depending on what gear i'm in, its a different sound..in park its a fast knock sound...in reverse it slows down quite a bit and becomes a bit louder/lower toned...in drive it speeds back up again and sounds somewhat like what it does in park (automatic C4 transmission)...my dad said it could be a valve problem...thought i'd check and see what anyone here had to say about it...so..any help? it would be much appreciated, thanks a lot.

i had same problem sort of. I ended up replacing a bunch of stuff...including main bearing....

first thing I would do is check the timing....because (and i felt stupid) that was what seemed to make it quiet down

other things to check for
exhaust leak
valve adjustment
oil pan being dented (that happened to someone here)
carb too lean
radio not being loud enuff*

HI
I tend to agree with chaz
exhaust leak
valve adjustment
If you don't have a stethascope you can use a screw driver (long one) and put one end (the pointed side) to the valve cover the other end (handle side) to your ear, and move it along the valve cover and if it is a lifter or valve adjustment you should be able to hear it. I realy supect it is a exhaust leak eather where the pipe attaches to the header or where the header attaches to the head.

Sean, just a wild guess, but you stated the noise changes in change of transmission selections. Just check the flexplate for cracks & the converter bolts being loose. As i said just a long shot. william
