Howdy Ritchie;
Know that the '65 carb and Load-a-matic distributor were designed to work together. The Autolite 1100 1V carb has a Spark Control Vzalve that sends a modified load sensitive vacuum signal to the distributor, which is dsigned to read that signal and supply just the right amount of advance at just the right time. When all pieces work as designed the system works adequtely.
Change one and the other does not work as designed.
When you upgrade to a 2V, consider upgrading your ignition system to a '68 or later, non-Load-a-matic type, which will have both centrifugal and vacuum advance- and be compatible with the ported vacuum signal from the carb.
You will either need to use a funnel adaptor to mount any 2V or modify the log to mount the carb directly. The former frequently includes hood clearance problems, the latter removing the head for machining and modifying.
Many here have successfully used the H/W 2 stage 2V carb with an adaptor. It will also require linkage and fuel line modifications, as well as a non-stock type air cleaner or a modified base on a stock type air cleaner.
There's no such thing as a free lunch. But the upgrade combo of '68 and later ignition and a 2V carb make for a nice improvement. Good luck.
