So, I bought my new DUI distributer for my 200 I6. I go to install it tonight and it won't fit. The gear is too big to fit into the shaft. What's wrong? My 200 is the 7 main bearing from a 67 Mustang.
Will it physically not fit down into the shaft or are the teeth just not engaging? I have a HEI-style (non-DUI) that I installed last year. I had to do some wigglin and cursin to get it in but she finally went. I managed to put it in 180* off the first time too. Shot some impressive flames out the carb. Once I knew what to do though, it dropped right in when I re-oriented it. I've had it out 2 or 3 times since then and everything is square now.
X2 on are you sure it's the gear: When I installed mine a few years back, the hex drive wouldn't engage the socket on the bottom of the distributor - socket was just a bit too small. I ended up having to hit the oil pump hex shaft with a file to get it to engage the distributor.
Yeah, it physically won't fit down the shaft. I assumed it would at least slide into the shaft, and I would have trouble with the gears aligning , but I can't even get that far. It simply won't go in.
A word to the wise is always have a spare hex shaft & see if it will insert easily into the distributor shaft.
You can always remove the burrs on the distributor shaft prior to installation.
Compare the new gear diameter to the one on your old distributor. If they don't match I'd say call DUI and have them overnight you a new one free of charge. For a $400 distibutor, you'd think that they could get right
Sorry folks, the AC went out on my home and I had to deal with that. I picked up the old distributor and will compare the two. I'll post pictures tonight.
I snapped some photographs...but no matter what size I made them (max 600px tall) I couldn't get them to post.
I did call DUI though. Based on the ID number for the distributor, they told me I was given a distributor for a 300ci. I bought it from CI. DUI said I could send it back into them (DUI) and they'll exchange it, even though I didn't get it straight from CI.
It's quite clear the gear is too big to fit inside the block.
Performance Distributors has many problems with rotor interference, hold down holes in rotor not aligned with advance mounting surface screw holes.
Their customer service is very good. They do back up their product.
Tell them you want a distributor with 20 Degrees centrifugal & not the CI 24 degree centrifugal.
They will do custom work on the advance if you know what you want.
Gday Bill,
Are you able to explain a bit further about the rotor and advance interference? What's the best way to check this, is it fairly obvious to see if there is a problem?
Very obvious, the rotor hold down holes do not align with the plate.
If binding occurs the rotor will not rotate because the weights will interfere with the rotor.
