New Turbo

Elsewhere, the seller advertises a "REAL Garrett" for $1200, with picture that shows the brand and the factory box.

It makes me a bit cynical about whether the one offered above, is actually a Garrett.

Yeah, I was thinking a T04e - 50 trim - .63 A/R Compressor. I'm a little less confident in my desired exhaust side estimate of a T4 - P trim - .69 A/R.

Does anyone know of a good turbo supplier that won't cost me more than the entire car is worth? A turbo right from Garrett, turbonetics, or precision, is definitely out of my budget.

Thanks,

Just have to surf eBay--it would probably be cheaper to buy a used turbo that can be rebuilt. If you have any diesel shops in your area, that's another place to check for used turbos. Sometimes they'll almost give them away. They aren't too hard to rebuild, and a rebuild kit is anywhere from 25-75 bucks.

A Holset HX35, HX40, HY35 or HY40 would also be good. They came on trucks with the Dodge Cummins engine, and Ford diesels.

I'd be happy to consider Holset, but I have yet to see a real compressor map for any of their turbos. All I've ever seen is a basic graph that shows what horsepower "range" each of their turbos will work for.

Yeah, they are pretty secretive about their compressor maps. However, they are decently sized turbos that can be had for cheap. I saw a post on Turbomustangs where the guy made 450 hp or so with a 302 non-intercooled. It was restricting the exhaust a good bit I'm sure. The 2.3 guys routinely make 450-500 hp with HX35's, so there is power to be made with a variety of engines. I always look for the cheap way to go, and this seems like it. I'm tempted to bid on this one this one.

I would stay away from used turbos if you can, unless you can inspect it personally before laying out the cash. Oftentimes there is more damage than originally thought.

A Holset HY35 is a good match for a 200.

You don't have to spend $1200 to get a good turbo. Stay away from Chinese if you can help it. If you can't afford to do it right then don't bother starting at all.
