Is it worth adding the Pertronix ignition to get rid of the points? Is it really as simple as taking off the distributor cap and installing it (like the guy at mustangs plus tells me) or should I add other items as well? Like coil, spark plug wires etc...

It really is that simple, i did it, well technically you have to change out a few wires.

Some people have reported minor filing required to get the unit fixed down properly.

Also the timing will need to be reset.

Remember that after installing it, you still have the same advance curve and distributor wear as before. If either was a problem, it will not be fixed with the addition of a Pertronix.

Have you considered the option of using a GM ignition module triggered by points?

I installed the Pertronix l a few weeks ago and it is not much work. I did however find that I had to make a couple of minor modifications in order to get it installed correctly. I have a stock Load-A-Matic distributor and I had to file the Pertronix wire fittings (copper) in order to get them thru the bottom hole of the dizzy. I also had to file the Pertronix base plate a little bit in order to get the air gap set to .030" per their instructions. After installation, most people gap their spark plugs larger than what is spec'd, and they also advance their timing anywhere from 4-8 degrees more than what is spec'd . I installed Pertronix's ignition system on my 1973 VW about 8 years ago and have not had a problem. It is nice not having to change the points every other year or so! Good Luck! Jim S.Cal

I added the Pertronix to my stock 170 and it works fine.Did not have to file down or anything.Just removed the points and condenser and away it went>It has been running fast but I never did get the timing reset.Still have a hard time cold starting though.I amsure there is a problem elsewhere.

I'm using the Pertronix on my '63 170. I didn't have any problems with the installation, if anything it took me longer to work up the courage to do it than to actually do the conversion. Although I don't drive the '63 as much any more, the engine ran better & I'm checking the points constantly.

All things considered, given the choice, I'm going to stick with either DS1 or2 when I replace the 170 with a 200. Both my '65 falcon & '84 truck have the DS2. Being from a fairly rural area, I like the fact that I can walk into a parts store & be able to pull something off the shelf to get me home. Just a personal preference, thats all.
