Piston rings question

Well, I figured with the motor pulled apart, I had better make sure the rings aren't the problem (low compression on a cylinder or two). I popped the piston out of #2 (the really bad one). Looked ok, but when I showed a buddy, he pointed out that the top ring was upside down! The dot was on the bottom. He said that the mark is always supposed to be up. Would have been nice if the guy that helped me the first time knew that!!

I pulled all of them out to check: 4/6 were upside down!

Would upside down top ring keep the ring from seating well, causing lower compression and a bit of smoking on WOT?

According to one of my engine rebuild manuals, the answer is yes due to designed-in ring taper that uses the combustion pressure to seal against the cylinder wall. It only works right with the dots up.

Bryce, I'm glad you got to the bottom of you problem. buy a set of new rings & rehone the cylinders.

Just wondered why you installed a new cam. Was it a wear issue or just an upgrade?? Get to work. William

With the coil bind issues and rocker arm issues I had a few lobes that we less than happy.
