Anyone running Electric fans as their primary system?

The 250 in the 61 Roundbody requires a fresh approach. Need info on thermostat setup as well as fan.

Powerband, on my 67 mustang I use a spal 14" as a pusher with curved blades. I had to rotate the housing so the flat reliefs are at 12 o'clock & 6 o'clock to clear the lip in front of the 3 row radiator.
By the way I found a USA made 3 row radiator from scott drake via las vegas mustang parts. The cost was $250.00 but the quality was superior to the tiawan junk sold by mustangs unlimited & other suppliers.
I know modine makes a 3 row for the 66 & below mustangs plus possibly other models.

To get back to the fan, I highly recommended spal.

www.spal.com

I used their 4 strap system & attached them to the mounting bolts holding the radiator to the radiator support.

If you want a photo, I will post it when I get home from work.

It is thermostatically controled via a sensor that screws into the thermostat housing.

Spal products are very high quality & the fan with the curved blades is very quiet. William

I'm running a 16" Mr. Gasket pusher fan and have done away with my mechanical fan altogether. All is well and has been for almost three years now. I have A/C too.

8) while i havent yet replaced an engine driven fan with an electric, i am planning to do so in all my cars. you want at least 2000cfm of air flow for a six. and i agree that spal makes some excellent fans.

HI PB-
I installed a 14 inch Derale pusher since there was not enough clearance between my rad and the water pump for the fan. I removed the mechanical fan and the electric fan rarely turns on when driving < 10 -15 MPH. I have it start at 205 degrees and go off at 185, but the unit is adjustable and I can choose any settting. I made a "T" connection into the lower rad hose and installed the sensor there. I would have preferred the upper rad hose since hot liquids rise but there is not enough room... I also installed a dash light to go on when the fan turns on - and had to install a diode (in the form of a $4 bridge rectifier from Radio Shack) to prevent the light from turning on when it spun on the freeway. I also added a tranny cooler while I was at it. Here it is - the tranny cooler is angled on the passenger side behind the grill and the pusher fan is in the center:

Anyway, I am quite happy with the setup.
Here is my attempt at a schematic (warning - amateur electical skills here...):

Good luck and stay cool!

I've been running a permacool pusher fan for the past 5 years. Nothing but a heavy duty on/off switch. Switch on when starting car, switch off when I get out.....it runs all the time.

Dont remember if its a 14" or 16" though..... :?

180 degree thermostat and water wetter. Never had a problem with it.

Doug

How on earth did you fit it between the a/c condenser and the hood latch support? I don't think I've got nearly enough room in my '62...

I know you didn't ask me, but on my 63 Comet with my 3 row rad, I had to cut about 1/2 inch off the hood support to fit the fan. I pulled a spare off a 62 Comet in a local junkyard in case I ever need to go back to stock.

Thanks for the Pics, Looks like the '61 Comet hood setup and I'll be more knowledgable sorting out the details.

PS- I WISH the local "junkyard " had anything other than 4 year old Kia's and lots of late model GM Chrys/Daim stuff...

I switched my electric fan from a puller to a pusher in front of the rad this spring. Thermostatically controlled to switch on around 180-190*.

Much more space in the engine compartment.

To get my 16" to fit, I removed my vertical support and discarded it. Then I relocated the actual latch mechanism from above the support to below, after some trimming of tabs and such. Then the entire latch assembly was relocated about an 1" higher on the radiator support.
I discarded the spring on the hood post to help with the decreased distance. Now when I pull the latch, it doesn't spring up. It's a two hand operation to open the hood. One hand pulls the latch, the other releases the safety catch and lifts the hood. Works really well and is a great security check too.
This was all easier than it sounds and at a glance looks completely stock.
