Question about drilling out a water pump bolt

I finally have a whole drilled all the way through..But I lost a one inch peice of the drill bit. ...will it hurt if it is in the engine block?
I shined the light all in their and cant find it..

Make sure you haven't pockmarked the cylinder wall, and it all ought to be OK.

I stupid I guess but what does that mean?

when you look through the hole your water pump slips into, you can see a curved rusty bit of iron. That's the outside of #1 cylinder. If you damage that, there's a risk the cylinder will split and you'll need block repairs.

Similarly, when refitting the pump, check your bolt lengths to avoid them butting into this metal.

Are we talking about a 200? And one of the 3 water pump mounting bolts?

Don't all 3 of them go into the water jacket or what amounts to the back half of the pump housing? I remember the bottom one does for sure.

If you drilled through the flange where the threads are and into something else you may have a problem unless it was just into the water jacket by #1 like Addo was talking about. In that case I think I would try and plug the hole so it does not disrupt coolant flow (assuming you didnt damage the cylinder) which is another problem.

Or did the part of the bit just fall into one of the water passages?

Its on a 200, It is the top left one that holds the alt bracket on..all I see is a narrow space..Also just broke an ease out in the whole. crap

Stick a mechanics magnet in there and see if it picks up any loose stuff.

it picks up the shavings, nothing else guess its way back there

Drill bits often become magnetic from use maybe its stuck to something? As long as its not going to get into the water pump I wouldnt think it would hurt anything. I dont have a block apart (yet) to look at so I dont have any more ideas.
