What are those big red boxes that some of the DS2 kits come with do? I know they are ignition boxes but are they really necessary or are they just an option for those building performance motors?

8) they are a control module for the ignition system. the distributor only has the trigger.

The most common red box that has been around for many years is a MSD 6 series. They can run off of most types of distributors. They can do multiple sparks per cycle. They are a capacitive discharge which means it takes the 12v and charges an internal capacitor that then is discharged into the coil. The theory is hotter more positive spark and multiple sparks to increase chances of a complete burn. I can tell you for sure you dont want to get close to even the wires going to the coil with one of those systems. I got bit in the ear this summer leaning over the motor while it was cranking. I have one running off points in my boat. The thing will idle in gear nice and smooth all day long now. Also much smoother and more positive feel when you lay into it. That being said I only have one of those boxes and have several engines I could easily put one on.
