removing smog stuff/ good or bad

I have an 83LTD. My head gasket is leaking and I need to replace it. Thr underhood clutter , hoses, valves etc are a PITA to work around. I'd like to get rid of all this stuff but have been told my car would not run right without it. How about some opinions ? Experiences? Thanks.

Hi ltdbob,

Your member listing doesn't say where you live. If you are in California DO NOT REMOVE. You won't be able to get the car registered. Car must be 25+ years old to be exempt.

If this is not a problem, removal will improve performance. Not because the systems are poorly engineered, but because after 20 years a total rebuild will be needed to make them work well.
