seems everything wants to play up at once on my car!!!..
starter motor has been on the way out for a while, today it finally required a bit of a hit to start, so i think its timew for a new one, incase the time comes when a hit is not enough :)

basically, is there any type of better starter motor i can go for, or just stick with a stocky??

Look at improving the earth straps and crappy grade wire Ford Oz used. Go up two grades, and have an extra set of alternator, battery and ignition componets on hand. Get em cheap without big $$$. There is a CCA load test that can be done on your battery to see if the cells are defective. Last step is to redo the starter. The kW rating needs to be better than the 1.1 kW I think they pushed out. Don't know much more.

Electronics make diagonis a begger. Backlash or A7M could set you straight. I'm a poor diagonis person. I just find components that don't work exactly right first time a bad policy. Nothin worse than being stood up in a Falc when a Holden or Toyota goes by!

Matt.
If your starter motor is playing up then spend the money now and get it fixed before it leaves you stranded.
Yes the cabling in fords leaves a bit to be desired but make sure that it and the connections are in good condition, clean and tight.
The starter soleniod is the extra tube thing on top of the starter motor.
Make sure the connections are good and tight there. Grab the ositive cable there and wiggle it, ( technical term for shaking up and down).
Look to see if the end of the solenoid is loose.
There are two screws that hold the end onto the starter. If loose then poor internal connections will cause poor performance.
Tighten them up, probably have to disconnect the battery.
If poor starting is still a then might be time to get the starter recoed.

P.S. Is the starter not turning or is it screeching and not turning the engine?

See, were makin' him waste words more. We're wearing you down boy!

Fords shouldn't have staters. They need a hand crank.

it still turns, no screaching........ just struggles to turn over.... it always ends up starting but only after a few turns.... and just yesterday it needed its first whack (technical term for smashing it with a big object) to start but fine since then

Matty, either go for a reduction gearing type (no idea on which one will fit), or a Ford clapper (heavier, and needs a separate relay).

I believe a lot of starter problems are due to poor rebuilds. There is more to undercutting insulation than people appreciate.

Matt,
If alls well and it is still cranking slowly.
Abattery test that requires two people,
is to remove all the cell caps on the battery.
While one person looks at the electrolyte.
Another is to turn on the headlamps and try to crank the engine.
This will cause a massive currant draw on the battery, if any of the cells have sulphated/shorted, then the bad cell will bubble.
Of course the electrolyte has to be at the correct level to start with.
Usually above the plates. If the battery is dry. You can see the plates.
Fill with the correct electrolyte, available from your local battery retailer.
And carry out the test.
If the battery is a bit flat, this will push it over the hill.
A quick fix/try, is to wire in a relay to power the starter.
This will send a full twelve volts to the operating wire of the starter.
But if all this still fails and the cranking speed is still slow then the starter will have come out and be repaired/rebuilt/replaced.
Give this ago and see if it helps.

if your getting a new starter there are 2 different ones that i know of.
both will work fine but one has 1.4kw where the other is only 1.1kw .
the 1.4kw is a plantary gear set up and is 15mm shorter in overall length.
the extra clearance should be a bonus if your running extractors.

cheers dave

i rang around... the cheapest new one i found was $118 from veales.... ive got a brand new battery which helped as it always starts now, before the terminals were gone and it wouldnt do anything..... ive been real slack and ive really been pushing my luck by not replaing it so soon it will be done i hope and ill let yas know what i go for..

After pulling out a Cleaveland V8 and putting it into a home-made stand, I tried to start it with some old jumper leads, but it wouldn't do more than a few groans. There was spark getting to the plugs (first thing to check he he), but I noticed the jumper leads were actually getting really hot.

So I got some other heavy duty jumper leads and hooked it up and it started first thing.

=> Make sure there is sufficient current getting to the motor. Clean all connections, and make sure the wires are up to scratch.

Shhh. Don't say the C******d word here. Addo is a I6 man.

Hey Adam, I'm using a C******d starter on my Falcon. Am I going to the Dark Side?
.

C******d's are an old flame of mine.

It's just the cost of anything forward of the flexplate and behind the harmonic balancer that scares me!
