i have gone thew 2 in less then a month...it makes a horrable grinding noise b4 it starts. Now i just makes a whineing nose like the starter is moveing but does nothing. plz help im lost

sounds like your ring gear is wornout or the solinoid is not throwing out far enough. What happened to the last 2 starters, did they chew out the
drive or just stop going?

cheers dave

just changed the solenoid still no luck. took the starter off and it has a little wear but nothing to bad fly weel looks to be in decent shape as well. got it to crank once then actually turned over. tryed it again and nothing just the sound of the starter going

It sounds like for whatever reason the starter is not engaging the flywheel correctly.. there should be no grinding...

since this has eaten two possibly three starters, maybe the problem lies elsewhere?

there are different starters for Automatic and manual transmissions are you using the right one? I had trouble at first getting the right one...

I bought mine from NAPA and I was running a C4... I bought the one for the Automatic and took it home and found for one reason or another I needed the one for the manual... I ran that starter for 2 years without any problems... the one in the box that was for the automatic was not a match for my torque converter. Never found out exactly why that was the case... I assumed at the time it was a case of wrong part wrong box... they are almost identical.

My next thought would be something shorting or causing the starters to fry early? how are you electrical connections and wiring....?

wires should be ok never had an electrical problem before and i can hear the starter. i have the 3 speed manual is there anyway to tell if i have the starter for an automatic?
