When I start my car hot or cold I have to hold the pedal down 3/4 of the way for it to start. If I only push down 1/2 or less, it spits gas out the top of the carb. When it runs it is pretty good but seems to lack a little power. Ideas??????

BTW Can someone post step by step directions on how to adjust this carb if you have them.

uh oh.... no response. I'm not the best at tuning carbs :? Any tips would be a big help :!:

That sure sounds like a backfire during startup. How is the timing and what do the plugs look like?

Thanks for the reply.

Timing is dead on according to my mustang manual. Plugs are new. I have heard guys say to advance the timing a bit. Would that help and if so does that mean I am aiming for a higher number or closer to zero on the timing marks?

thanks again! :D

loosen the distributor and turn it counter clockwise a little. That will advance the timing. Set it to 12 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).

Check to make sure you don't have any really big vacuum leaks. Look at the PCV, power brake, trans modulator, and any other connections to the carb or manifold.

Thanks Jack!

I advanced the timing and found a little piece of hose about 3 inches long that enters the trans which was stretched and hard. I replaced it and it seems to start better. Also the car has a little more pep because of the timing.

BTW I made my own air cleaner also using the granada bottom cut down and another top. It has way better flow because the whole filter is open rather then just the snorkle. I notice more of a sucking noice now when I drive it. I assume this is normal??

Make sure the air filter is seated properly, top and bottom, so the air is actually going through the element.

Hey Spyke,

Some of us have made our own chrome cleaners and while they look cool the real function is supposed to be filtering. Per the last posting the filter has to seat down all the way around or you could suck in some debris and that would be very bad. As Jack has pointed out before...CLEAN COLD AIR is much better than HOT COLD AIR...so for optimum results the snorkl type with hoses to fresh air would be better than the surrounding hot engine air.
