greetings.

i have a xf efi 6, auto and i have come across something i need some help with.
if i leave my car running for a few minutes then the needle on the temp gadge reaches half. first off i put a new thermostat in, cleaned out the radiator, put all that crap in it thats suppose to clean it, checked the water pump which seems fine and the fan clutch also seems fine so i was wondering what am i missing. it heats up pretty quick even if i go around the block which is less than a hundred metres.
Also when my motor is running it makes a fast ticking noise to me it sounds like something some where is hiting something.

thanks for your help.

So does it overheat or are you losing coolant? Or does it just warm up really fast? If it's just warming fast that's a blessing - means the thermostat is doing it's job & your motor is spending little time cold under load (which equals wear). Does the gauge move around much when it's warm?

i dont think it loses any coolant and it takes about 2 minutes until the needle starts heading towards halfway, but i noticed that if a put in drive and sit there with my foot on the brake it stops heading to the H.
if it is loosing coolant its only a tiny bit.

Looks like XF EFI autos are becoming the most posted request for help.
If you have the up market/starwars dash in your XF, completely ignore this unreliable gauge.
If you have the low spec normal gauge, then grab a thermometer and check the gauge for accuracy.
A lot of the XF gauges were horribly optimistic, especially the fuel gauge.
Check the gauge anyway and see if it is acctually a problem.
It is not unknown for these engine to be operating a satisfactory temp and the needle dancing across the gauge.
Check all the dash to body and the engine to body earth straps. I fone is disconnected then the gauges will be inaccurate.

sorry to but in but after reading the reply from 'yeah right' it made me wonder.....
my XF 250 carby, takes a long time to get to its normal running temp..... which is a 1/4 on the origianl poverty pack dash..... it can take up to 5-10 mins easy to reach this temp... is this something to worry about..... i never thought anything of it, cos, well, it aint overheating..

How about starting an 'XF Overheating Problems' forum!
I just changed my engine, after 1 week changed out thermostat because it was running cold all the time, it actually fell apart (went fishing in the head for bits!), anyways, with the new thermo it runs between 1/2 and 3/4 temp, moving all the time as the pump etc cuts in and out. Is this too hot? Should I get a lower temp rated thermo or do the old 'drill holes in the body' of it? The old motor used to move between half and the next mark up. This ones seems a tad too high.

Cheers,

Brad.
